Hi @Barb208,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating it is to see error code -4 when you’re just trying to set up your new HP OfficeJet Pro 8139e on Wi-Fi. That error usually means the printer cannot complete the wireless setup due to network communication issues. Let’s fix this step by step:

Why does Error Code -4 Happens

  • The printer can’t reach the router or the internet.
  • Incorrect Wi-Fi credentials.
  • Router settings (like MAC filtering or firewall) are blocking the printer.
  • The HP app is unable to communicate with the printer during setup.

Step-by-Step Fix

1. Restart Everything

  • Power cycle your printer, router, and device (phone/PC).
  • Wait 2–3 minutes for the network to stabilize.

2. Check Wi-Fi Requirements

  • Printer supports 2.4 GHz networks (not 5 GHz only).
  • Ensure your device is on the same network as the printer.

3. Reset Printer Network Settings

  • On the printer control panel:
    • Tap Setup > Network Settings > Restore Network Defaults.
  • This clears old settings and prepares for a fresh setup.

4. Use HP App

5. Temporarily Disable VPN/Firewall

  • If you’re using a VPN or a strict firewall, disable it during setup.

6. Advanced Router Check

  • Ensure MAC address filtering is off.
  • Enable DHCP (automatic IP assignment).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
