compaq 6230 internet problems

hi

i have a compaq 6230 with windows xp i have found out its got service pack 2 in it its got windows xp pro in it

when i try to get it on my wi-fi it will scan for networks and finds mine but when i click to connect i get

windows is unable to connect to the selcected network the network maybe out of range even though it across the room

then using a cat 4 cable hooked right up to the modem i get something about the same

i was going to use google chrome for this as my browser because of my other i have like this is the only thing i can get on the net with,so when it goes thu getting chrome installed i get another message asking to whitelist chrome installer which ive done it still wont get on the net cable or wireless

the button is on ive checked the device manager and everything is good no yellow marks on anythingive even have used the network repair thing as well its showing that im hooked up but it still let me on

anything else including this hp laptop will hook up no problem

any ideas?

i also suspect because it dont have service pack 3 in it that might be causing problems i ran into something like that once with the other when i upgraded it to sp3 it fixed that problem

the xp thats in this laptop looks like and acts like its very old ,ive seen somewhere where its saying 2002 i think this might be part of my problem too

i would be still using the otherive had for 15 years but it totally died so i found this one ive got this one untill i can get on the net it cant be upgraded or anything right now
