Hi @Mitty66,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

We understand that you are trying to change the connection from USB to wireless on your HP OfficeJet 4650 All‑in‑One Printer. When a printer was originally installed with USB, it needs to be reconfigured and added again as a wireless printer. Please follow the steps below.

Restore Network Settings on the printer (MOST IMPORTANT)

This puts the printer back into Setup Mode, which is required for the HP Smart app to configure Wi‑Fi.

On the OfficeJet 4650 control panel:

  1. Tap Setup (looks like a gear)
  2. Scroll to Network Setup
  3. Select Restore Network Settings
  4. Confirm Yes

The wireless light should now begin fast blinking (this is good).

Delete the USB Printer from Your Computer

If the computer still “remembers” the USB version, the wireless version cannot be added.

On Windows:

  1. Settings → Bluetooth & Devices → Printers & Scanners
  2. Click HP OfficeJet 4650
  3. Select Remove Device

On Mac:

  1. System Settings → Printers & Scanners
  2. Select HP OfficeJet 4650
  3. Click – (minus) to remove

This clears the old USB driver profile.

Restart Printer AND Router

A clean wireless handshake helps the HP 4650 “announce” itself again.

  1. Power off the printer
  2. Unplug the router for 20 seconds
  3. Plug the router back in
  4. Wait 2 minutes
  5. Turn the printer back on
  6. Confirm the Wi‑Fi light is fast blinking

Use HP Smart to Reconnect Wirelessly

This is the correct HP‑supported method.

  1. Open the HP App on your phone or computer
  2. Tap + Add Printer
  3. Wait for:
    HP OfficeJet 4650 (Setup)
  4. Select your 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi network
(The 4650 does NOT support 5 GHz)
  5. Enter your Wi‑Fi password
  6. Wait until the blue Wi‑Fi light becomes solid

If the HP App does not detect the printer, go to the last step.

Optional: Use USB One Last Time to Convert to Wireless

This ALWAYS works if the printer is being stubborn.

  1. Connect the USB cable
  2. Open HP App
  3. Tap your printer
  4. Go to Printer Settings → Advanced Settings
  5. Tap Network → Wireless Setup Wizard
  6. Choose your Wi‑Fi
  7. Enter password
  8. After it connects → Disconnect USB

Your printer is now wireless.

If the printer refuses all wireless setup

If the Wi‑Fi icon never blinks or the 4650 never enters setup mode:

Re-enable the Wireless Module:

  1. Tap Setup
  2. Tap Network Setup
  3. Tap Wireless Settings
  4. Tap Wireless On/Off
  5. Turn Wireless ON

Then repeat Step 1.
