HP OfficeJet Pro 6978.  I have a new desktop computer without "Location" services.  I would like to connect them using existing wifi network.  The HP Smart software is installed on the computer but I can't add the printer without enabling "Location" service on the new computer, which doesn't have it.

Hello @MGFedorko, Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the HP Officejet Pro 6978.

We appreciate the opportunity to assist you and are glad we could help work toward a resolution. We hope our support has been valuable.

To help us get started on resolving your issue, could you please try a few troubleshooting steps provided below so that I can assist you further?

Step-by-step

  1. Make sure the printer is not connected by Ethernet.
Connecting an Ethernet cable turns off wireless capability.
  2. Confirm your wireless network is working and that the printer and computer will be on the same network.
  3. On the printer control panel, open the wireless setup menu:
    • Swipe down or touch the tab at the top to open the Dashboard.
    • Touch Wireless.
    • Touch Settings.
    • Touch Wireless Settings.
    • Touch Wireless Setup Wizard.
  4. Select your Wi-Fi network name and complete the on-screen prompts to connect the printer to the network.
  5. After the printer is connected, add/install it from HP software on Windows.
HP provides two Windows software options:
    • Install HP Smart, then follow the on-screen steps.
    • Go to support page > Software and Drivers > Printer, enter your printer model, and download the Full Solution or Full Feature Software and Driver.
  6. If HP Smart still does not detect the printer, use the full driver package from HP Support instead of HP Smart.
  7. Optional: Print a wireless test report from the printer control panel to confirm the wireless connection:
    • Open Dashboard > Wireless > Settings
    • Touch Print Reports
    • Touch Wireless Test Report

Important note

The provided HP setup content specifically mentions turning on Bluetooth and Location Services for iOS/Android mobile devices when using HP Smart. It does not state that Windows desktop setup requires Location Services if you connect the printer first through the printer’s Wireless Setup Wizard and then install/add it using HP software.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
