Hi @JohnC488,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 is not being recognized by your laptop for scanning. Let’s go through a few steps to fix this.

Check Printer Status

Make sure the printer is powered on and shows “Ready” on its display.

Ensure there are no error messages like “Offline” or “Paper Jam.”

Verify Connection

If using Wi-Fi: make sure the printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your laptop.

On the printer’s control panel, go to Wireless > Network Settings > Wireless Summary to check the connection.

If using USB: ensure the cable is firmly plugged into both the printer and the laptop.

Avoid using USB hubs or extenders during setup.

Check if Printer is Detected by the Laptop

On Windows, go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.

See if the HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 appears in the list.

If it doesn’t, click Add a printer or scanner and follow the prompts.

Install or Update HP Software

Visit the official HP Support website.

Enter HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 as the printer model.

Download and install the latest HP Smart app or Full-Feature Software and Driver package for your laptop’s operating system.

Set as Default Printer and Scanner

In Printers & Scanners, select the HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 and choose Manage > Set as default.

Open the HP Smart app and ensure it detects the printer and enables scan functions.

Restart Devices

Turn off both your laptop and the printer.

Power them back on and wait until both reconnect to the network.

Test Scanning

Open the HP Smart app or Windows Fax and Scan.

Try scanning a document to confirm that the laptop now recognizes the printer.

I hope this helps.
