getting error scanner not available

Hi @dgrech54

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand you’re receiving a “Scanner Not Available” error on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8028e. This usually means the computer or HP app is unable to establish communication with the printer’s scanner, even though the printer may still be available for printing. We can narrow this down by checking the connection, scanning application, and scanner detection.

Before proceeding with troubleshooting, could you please confirm:

  • Are you using Windows or macOS, and what is the operating system version?
  • Is the printer connected via Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or USB?
  • Does the printer itself show any scanner-related error on its touchscreen, or does the error appear only on the computer/HP app?
  • Can you print successfully from the same computer?
  • Does the scanner work from the printer's touchscreen (for example, Scan to Computer) or does scanning fail there as well?

Once these details are confirmed, we can determine whether the issue is related to the printer connection, HP software, or the scanner hardware.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
