"NO FILTERING" Fail

Hi @ddwintz

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for describing the issue so clearly. When your HP OfficeJet 8600 finds the router but fails to connect to the internet with a “NO FILTERING” failure, it typically points to a network-level block or firmware misinterpretation of router security settings.

Let’s walk through a focused recovery path to help restore connectivity.

1. Power Cycle Printer and Router

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug your router and wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug the router back in and wait for full boot.
  • Turn the printer back on and retry the connection.

2. Forget and Reconnect to Wi-Fi

  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Wireless Settings.
  • Select your network → Choose Forget or Remove.
  • Re-run the Wireless Setup Wizard and re-enter your Wi-Fi password manually.

3. Check Router Security Settings

  • Log into your router (usually via 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1).
  • Ensure the following:
    • SSID broadcast is enabled.
    • Security type is set to WPA2-Personal (avoid WPA3 or mixed modes).
    • MAC filtering is disabled or your printer’s MAC address is whitelisted.
    • DHCP is enabled (printer needs dynamic IP assignment).

4. Assign Static IP

If DHCP is unstable:

  • On the printer, go to Network SettingsAdvanced Settings.
  • Assign a static IP (e.g., 192.168.1.150), subnet mask (255.255.255.0), and gateway (your router’s IP).

5. Update Printer Firmware

  • Visit the HP OfficeJet 8600 Driver Page.
  • Download and install the latest firmware update.
  • Connect the printer via USB if Wi-Fi is unavailable and run the installer.

6. Reset Network Settings

  • On the printer’s control panel:
    • Go to Settings → Network Settings → Restore Network Defaults.
    • Confirm and restart the printer.
    • Reconnect to Wi-Fi using the Wireless Setup Wizard.

Once these steps are complete, your printer should connect to the internet without triggering the “NO FILTERING” error. If the issue persists, let me know what the control panel shows after restart—I’ll guide you further based on that. You're close to restoring full connectivity.
