I'm having a terrible time installing my HP printer, old faithful, on my new Spectrum Network. HP Print and Scan Doctor quits

right after I connect the USB cable which I'm trying to use to install the printer to the network. Have not seen this happen before. It just won't complete the task of installing the printer on the wireless network. What would you suggest I do to get it installed on the network so I can use it with my laptop for wireless printing? Prior to having to install a new router and modem it worked great.  Thanks for the help

Bob, here's an update. I tried entering the IP address for the printer into Chrome and it would not work as the site is not secure and doesn't support  http protocol. Have any ideas on what I should do? [snip]

Do you mean the printer web server does not support the https: protocol?  That is likley, the built-in web servers in the printers likely only support http: protocol.

In Chrome you will likely get an error message.  Near the bottom of the page will be an "Advanced" box on the left.  Click on the advanced box, it will give an option to proceed (and a warning this is unsafe....).  Click to allow proceeding.

I would suggest you check the network settings:  on the Windows 10 notebook click on the wireless icon in the lower right of the taskbar.  This will bring up a list showing the connection, the active connection will be highlighted.  Click on the "Properties" link in the highlighted connection.   This will open a page with the settings for your wirelesss network.  Scroll down toward the bottom of that page and look for the IP Settings section.  In this area look for the "Network band:", this should be 2.4Ghz (not 5Ghz).  Also look for the IP4 address.  Compare the IP address of the computer with the IP address of the printer.  The first 3 sets of numbers should match. If not the computer and printer are not on the same network.

I would not suggest calling HP for paid support at this point, we should be able to get things working.

Thus past Sunday Spectrum installed a new Modem and Router for me. As a result, I have had to reinstall my two HP Printers.

Unfortunately, my older HP 3050A does not have the Install Wizard, So I have to use other methods.  I've exhausted every effort to get this printer properly installed. I've printed a status message on the printer and it tells me it had successfully done the install on the new network, gives me the IP data, etc. But, Print and Scan Doctor can't connect to it, and when I try to use the app to install the printer using a USB connection, Print and Scan crashes, just quits. I've tried using HP Smart and it doesn't help me. From Windows I search for and find the printer, have the proper driver, but cannot print a test page, get an error. I've shut down the Firewall on Avast, and that doesn't help. My Chromebook can't connect to the printer.

The printer had been working just fine prior to the new Router and Network. I'm at a loss. It works fine via USB but not wireless.  Can someone help me get this problem fixed?  Thanks for the help.

[I moved the two posts together because combined they have a bit more information.]

The printer will likely only respond to the first thing it receives commands from after a power-up, either the USB or the network.  I would suggest the following:  turn off the printer and disconnect the USB cable.  Turn the printer on and make sure it comes up as available on the network.  On your laptop go to the Control Panel App, then select Devices and Printers.

  • If the Hp 3050A shows up as one of the printers right click on the printer and select Printer Properties.  Select the Ports tab and change the port to the appropriate TCP/IP port.  If the port is not listed in the list of ports select the Add Port... box, select Standard TCP/IP port, New Port, Next.  In the Printer Name of IP Address enter the IP address for the printer, Next.  Follow the steps to completion.
  • If the Hp 3050A does not show up as one of the printers then do the following: Click on Add a Printer near the top of the Devices and Printers page.  If the 3050A comes up in the list of printers shown click Next and follow to completion.  If the printer does not show up then select "The printer that I want isn't listed" near the bottom of the dialog box., Add a local or network printer with manual settings, Next.  In the next box select "Use an existing port" and check for the IP address of the printer.  If this is here select it and then select Next.  If not then select "Create a new port",  select "Standard TCP/IP port", Next, then type in the IP address, uncheck the box to automatically query the printer type, Next.  When the list of printers comes up select the manufacturer HP (not Hewlett Packard or Hewletlistt-Packard).  Scroll down the list and find your printer, either the HP Deskjet 3050A J611 series..  If there are multiple versions select the latest for your printer model, Next, Next, Next.  Check the "Set as default printer" if appropriate, Print a test page, Finish.

If you have any issues please list the step where the issue occurs and give the exact

wording of any error messages.

Bob: Thanks much for your reply, I'll work with the recommendations and see if I can get the printer working. I'll let you know the results..

Bob; I followed your recommendations, unfortunately, the printer was installed on Windows 10, but it shows to be "offline".

I show several versions of the 3050A printer on settings, Printers and Devices. Should I delete all of them and start over in Windows 10 doing a search for "new Printer"  The 3050A no doubt will not show up so I'll use "The Printer I want, etc"

I tried printing a test page and obviously that didn't work. Getting this installed will drive one nuts. Strange as I had it installed and working great before the new network, real bummer.

Thanks for your help.

OK, a few things to check:

  • Check the wireless settings - is the WiFi 2.4Ghz?  It will need to be to communicate with the printer, I do not think the 5Ghz WiFi will work with this older model printer.
  •  Find the IP address of the printer and put this in your browser.  Does it open the printer's web server?  If so it would indicate the printer and your notebook should be able to communicate.
  • Since you have multiple versions of the printer installed let's just pick one.  Do the thing I suggested first, right click on one of the HP Deskjet 3050A printers and select Printer Properties, then set the port as described above to match the printer's IP port.  Once you have saved this go to the General tab and click the "Print test page" button in the lower right.
  • If the page prints properly then exit from the Printer Properties dialog.  Right click again on the printer you just set and select "Set as default".

If all this works properly you should be set.  There is one additional suggestion, we should probably set an IP address outside the normal DCHP range.  For example, my router assigns IP addresses in the range 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.150.  I have printer set at 192.168.1.189 and make it a fixed address.  That way the printer IP address will not change after a power failure or other event causing a timeout.  You should be able to set the fixed IP adress by visiting the IP address of your printer in a browser (as we did above).  I will need to look some things up for this, let's put it off until I hear you have the printer working from your laptop (and desktop).

Thanks, Bob:  I'll give it a go a little later this morning, will let you know results. One question: Since I have multiple 3050A printers shown in the settings when I select Printers, should I uninstall all but the one I have selected to use before I follow the instructions you provided? Or should I do that in the Devices and Printers in the Control Panel?

Bob: I just finished doing what you recommended, it still won't connect and print a test page. it shows to be offline when I check settings in Windows 10. Using Print and Scan Doctor doesn't help, even though it shows the right network and Password, it will not connect. I'm batting zero trying to get it work. The ports are right, it looks good. If you want I can do some print screens and send you data, or we might be able to do a remote session if you are capable of doing that. By the way, would you recommend I check with HP Support and see what they charge to get the printer to work on my devices?

Thanks for the help
