Hi @notker,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When the "Attention" light is blinking on your HP LaserJet MFP 140w printer, it usually indicates a problem that needs to be addressed. Since the printer is connected to the internet and you've installed a new cartridge, here are a few steps to troubleshoot.

Check for Paper Jams: Make sure there are no paper jams inside the printer or in the paper tray. Even small bits of paper can cause the printer to malfunction.

Verify the Cartridge: Ensure that the new cartridge is installed correctly. Remove it and reinstall it, ensuring that it's securely placed in the printer.

Restart the Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it for about 30 seconds, and then plug it back in. This can help reset any internal errors.

Check Printer Status on the Computer:

  • Open the "Printers & Scanners" section on your computer.
  • Ensure that the printer is set as the default printer.
  • Check the queue for any pending jobs that might be stuck. Cancel any print jobs and try again.

Update Printer Firmware: Ensure that the printer has the latest firmware installed. You can do this via the HP Smart app or by visiting the HP support website.

Check for Connectivity Issues: Although the printer is connected to the internet, ensure that it has a stable connection to your router. You might want to reconnect it to Wi-Fi by following the steps on the printer’s control panel or using the HP Smart app.

Check Printer Settings: Sometimes, the issue may be due to a setting in the printer, such as a wrong paper size or print mode. Check the printer settings via the control panel or the HP Smart app.

If these steps don't resolve the issue, you can also check the printer's error code or status messages in the HP Smart app, which may provide more detailed information about the problem.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I tried your suggestions.   Nothing works. I forgot to mention in the first post that the power light is also blinking.  I deleted the printing queue but it did not help.

I'm adding my question here because it is closely related. Around the same time as the original post, I became aware that my MFP140W  had stopped printing. HP Smart App reported that the printer was offline and that I needed to login to my account to resolve the issue. HP Smart Online said that the printer couldn't connect to the Internet and therefore printing was unavailable. I defaulted the printer and re-setup WiFi. HP Smart App now reports the printer is online, ready to print, but needs attention. Under Security Status it reports that I have an unsecure network connection. Using the printer web console I can see that WiFi has excellent signal and is secured with wpa2-psk/wpa-psk. I printed a network test report and the security entry says, Pass. I've updated firmware. I've reset routers. Tried connecting to another router altogether. I can't print. I don't know what to try next.

@RobStockley,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

It sounds like your HP LaserJet MFP 140W is connected to the network but is still showing an "Attention" light and refusing to print. Since you've already tried resetting the printer, updating the firmware, and changing routers, let's go through a few additional troubleshooting steps.

Check for Error Messages on the Printer

  • If the printer’s control panel has a small display, check for error codes or messages.
  • If there’s no screen, press the Information button (🛈) or Resume button to see if it prints an error report.

Verify HP Smart and Web Console Messages

  • HP Smart App → Check for any specific error messages under "Needs Attention."
  • Printer Web Console (EWS) → Open the web interface by entering the printer’s IP address in a browser:
    1. Go to the Network or Security section.
    2. Look for any security warnings or firewall blocks that might be preventing printing.

Try Printing a Self-Test Page

  • Press and hold the Resume button () for about 5 seconds until it prints a configuration or test page.
  • If the printer successfully prints the test page, the issue is likely software-related.

Manually Reinstall the Printer Driver

Even though HP Smart recognizes the printer, the driver might be malfunctioning:

On Windows:

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click on the MFP140W, select Remove Device.
  • Reinstall it by downloading the latest driver from HP's support site.
  • During installation, use "Add a Printer" > TCP/IP option instead of Auto-Detect.

On macOS:

  • Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  • Remove the printer and re-add it using AirPrint or HP drivers.

Disable HP Smart App Requirement

Some users have reported issues where the HP Smart app requires login to print. Try bypassing this:

  • Open HP Smart > Go to Settings.
  • Disable "Require Login for Printing" (if available).
  • Try printing directly via USB or using the built-in Windows/macOS print dialog instead of HP Smart.

Perform a Factory Reset

Since you've already done some resets, try a full factory reset:

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Press and hold the Wireless and Cancel buttons while turning it back on.
  3. Release the buttons when the Attention light starts blinking.

Check Firewall & Security Settings

  • If you're using a WiFi router firewall, it might be blocking the printer.
  • Temporarily disable firewall or security software and try printing.

Test with Another Device

  • Try printing from a different PC, Mac, or even a mobile device using the HP Print Service Plugin (Android) or AirPrint (iOS).
  • If another device prints successfully, the issue might be specific to your computer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hawks_Eye,

Thank you for your time to reply. I've finally had a chance to try your suggestions. I've factory defaulted the printer again, using your instructions, then set up WiFi as before. The printer appears in HP smart AP on my phone and laptop. I can access the printer web interface. I can also access the printer from the HPSmart.com portal.

All places report that the printer is ready to print and that it requires attention. If I click through, the printer reports an insecure network connection. Wireless security is enabled. If I print a wireless network test report, security is marked as, PASS. I don't understand this.

I deleted all instances of the printer driver from Windows Printers and Scanners, then reinstalled the printer driver. It failed when I tried from HPSmart App. It worked when I added a new device manually. Now printing works again. Hoorah!
