Hi @lucy1111,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP OfficeJet Pro 8020 All-in-One Printer series displays a question mark, it typically indicates a communication error or an issue with recognizing the installed cartridges. Here are some steps you can try to resolve this issue:

1. Power Cycle the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

2. Check the Cartridges

  • Open the printer's access door and check if the cartridges are correctly installed.
  • Remove each cartridge and reinstall it to ensure it's seated properly.
  • Make sure you are using genuine HP cartridges compatible with your printer.

3. Clean the Cartridges and Contacts

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Remove the cartridges from the printer.
  • Using a lint-free cloth, gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer.
  • Reinstall the cartridges and close the access door.

4. Update Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Go to the HP support website and check if there is a firmware update available for your printer model.
  • Download and install the update following the provided instructions.

5. Reset the Printer

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait for 60 seconds, then plug the power cord back into the wall outlet and the printer.
  • Turn the printer back on and check if the issue is resolved.

6. Perform a Factory Reset

  • On the printer’s control panel, navigate to Setup or Settings.
  • Select Printer Maintenance or Tools.
  • Choose Restore or Restore Defaults and follow the on-screen instructions.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
