Hi @JohnV10,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for reaching out! I understand you're trying to connect your HP DeskJet 2820e printer to your laptop using your phone's hotspot due to a lack of internet access, and I can see how that could be a bit frustrating when the connection doesn't work as expected.

Why Hotspot Connections Can Be Unreliable

While some devices can connect via mobile hotspots, printers like the DeskJet 2820e are designed to work best with dedicated home Wi-Fi networks. Hotspots can be unstable or restricted in how they handle device-to-device communication, which is likely why your printer is not accepting the connection.

Alternative Option: Use Wi-Fi Direct

The good news is that your printer supports Wi-Fi Direct, which allows it to connect directly to your laptop or phone — no internet or router needed.

Here’s how to use it:

  1. Enable Wi-Fi Direct on the printer:
    • Press the Information (i) button once.
    • The printer should print a Wi-Fi Direct info page with the network name and password.

  2. Connect your laptop to the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct network:
    • On your laptop, go to Wi-Fi settings.
    • Look for a network name like HP-Setup-DeskJet 2820e-xxxx or DIRECT-xx-DeskJet 2820e.
    • Connect using the password from the info page.

  3. Print or scan as needed using the HP Smart app or directly from your software.

You don’t need internet access for Wi-Fi Direct — it works completely offline.
