HP DeskJet 2852e All-in-One Printer

Kept getting 'printer is offline' message when it most certainly is not. Had other problems with PC, too. Got new modem for desktop with new wi-fi network code. printer won't print. says is offline. realized printer is "connected" to old wifi network. can't reconnect.

1) i uninstalled printer. cannot reinstall it for love or money.

2) cannot change it out of old network. am now well and truly... in trouble.

Hi @PN61

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.

Here’s how to reconnect your printer to your new Wi-Fi network and get everything working smoothly again.

Step-by-Step Guide to Fix "Printer Offline" and Reconnect Printer:

1. Ensure Printer is Powered On

  • First, ensure your printer is powered on and the Wi-Fi button is blinking or showing a connection status.

2. Reset Network Settings on the Printer

Since your printer is still connected to the old Wi-Fi network, you’ll need to reset the printer's network settings to forget the old network.

  • Press and hold the Wi-Fi button on your printer for 5-10 seconds (this may vary depending on your model). This should reset the network settings on the printer.
  • If your printer has a Control Panel Screen, you can also navigate to the Network Settings and select Restore Network Defaults or similar options to reset the Wi-Fi settings.

3. Reconnect the Printer to the New Wi-Fi Network

Now that the printer has forgotten the old network, you’ll need to reconnect it to the new Wi-Fi:

  • Open the HP Smart app (on your computer or mobile device).
  • Go to Setup a New Printer or Add Printer.
  • Follow the prompts to connect your printer to the new Wi-Fi network. If prompted, enter your new Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password.

Alternatively, if you're not using the HP Smart app, you can also set up the printer using Wi-Fi Direct or WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup). To use this method:

  • For WPS: On your router, press the WPS button, then press and hold the Wi-Fi button on the printer for about 5 seconds. This should automatically connect the printer to your new network.
  • For Wi-Fi Direct: This will let you connect directly from your device to the printer without a router, but it’s best used for quick print jobs (not for regular use).

4. Reinstall Printer on Your Computer

If you've uninstalled the printer previously, you'll want to reinstall it once the printer is connected to the new network.

  • Windows: Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners, and click Add a printer or scanner. Your printer should show up in the list—click to add it.
  • Mac: Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners. Click the + button to add your printer. Ensure the printer is connected to the new Wi-Fi network before selecting it.

5. Check Printer Status

After reinstalling, try printing a test page or document. If it says "Printer Offline" again, ensure that:

  • Your computer and printer are on the same Wi-Fi network.
  • The printer is powered on and connected to the correct Wi-Fi network.

6. Troubleshooting if Printer Still Shows Offline

  • Check Firewall/Security Software: Sometimes, firewall settings or security software on your computer may block the printer. Make sure nothing is blocking the connection.
  • Restart the Computer and Printer: After reconnecting everything, sometimes a full restart of both devices can help clear any lingering issues.
  • Update Printer Drivers: Ensure your printer drivers are up to date. You can download the latest drivers from the HP Support website.
