Hi @hjgordon00,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for explaining the issue clearly. When your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281cdw shows “printer cannot connect to server” during Scan to Network Folder setup, even though printing works fine, it usually points to:

  • Incorrect folder permissions or credentials
  • Wrong SMB protocol settings
  • Firewall or network restrictions

Here’s how to fix it step by step:

1. Verify Folder Permissions

  • Create a folder on your Windows 11 PC (e.g., C:\Scans).
  • Right-click → Properties > Sharing > Advanced Sharing.
  • Enable Share this folder.
  • Click Permissions → Add Everyone → Allow Read/Write.
  • Note the Network Path (e.g., \\YourPCName\Scans).

2. Enable SMB Protocol

Windows 11 often disables older SMB versions:

  • Go to Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off.
  • Ensure SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support is checked.
  • Restart your PC.

3. Enter Correct Credentials in Printer

  • On the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS):
    • Go to Scan > Scan to Network Folder Setup.
    • Enter:
      • Folder Path: \\YourPCName\Scans
      • Username: Your Windows account name
      • Password: Your Windows account password
  • Save and test.

4. Check Firewall Settings

  • Open Windows Security > Firewall & Network Protection.
  • Allow File and Printer Sharing through the firewall.

5. Update Printer Firmware

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
