HP OfficeJet 3831 is shown as needing a new certification when installed on a new macbook-air. The new certification on the EWS requires the input of a username and PIN, which is not available on my printer. What can I do?

I understand your HP OfficeJet 3831 is asking for a new certification when installed on your MacBook Air, and the EWS is requesting a username and PIN that your printer does not have. Let’s go through a few steps to resolve this.
1. Check Printer Firmware
Ensure your printer has the latest firmware installed.
On the printer control panel, go to Settings → Printer Maintenance → Update.
If updates are available, install them and restart the printer.
2. Use the Correct Printer Connection
If you are using Wi-Fi, try connecting the printer via USB temporarily.
Some Mac systems may require a USB connection to complete initial certification before using network features.
3. Access the Embedded Web Server (EWS) Correctly
On your Mac, open a browser and type the printer’s IP address to access the EWS.
Look for the Security / Certificates section.
If it prompts for a username/PIN and none exists, try the following:
Use the default credentials if listed in the printer manual (often admin with blank password).
If there’s no default, you may reset network settings on the printer to clear old credentials.
4. Reset Network Settings
On the printer:
Settings → Network Setup → Restore Network Defaults
Reconnect the printer to Wi-Fi.
This clears old certificates or credentials that may trigger the EWS prompt.
5. Re-add the Printer on Mac
Remove the printer from System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
Add it again using the + button → Default tab to detect the printer automatically.
Use AirPrint if available; this bypasses certificate prompts entirely.
6. Check Security Settings on Mac
Ensure your Mac allows new certificates from local network devices:
System Settings → Privacy & Security → Certificates / Network Devices
Approve any certificate warnings related to your printer.
7. Test Printing
Open Preview or Safari and print a test page.
Confirm the printer connects without prompting for username or PIN.
I hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your help. I went through a 3hrs session with hp instant ink service, ultimately ending in a new certification by resetting the printer to factory standards. There was no way to detect the PIN required for the EWS. I experienced such a friendly and patient service never before! Printer is now working fine.
