Officejet Pro 8600 Plus
macOS 15.0 Sequoia

Two weeks ago, my trusty printer (old windows desktop) both suddenly lost wireless WiFi connection.  After the lost connections I proceeded to change to a Mac OS desktop.  Tried to seek HP support but could get past the "serial number" screen as it could not recognize it!.  I'm all ears for your advice.

Hi @Mindtweak,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can imagine how frustrating it must be to switch to macOS 15 (Sequoia) and suddenly lose wireless connectivity with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus, especially when HP’s support site doesn’t recognize your serial number. Let’s walk through the steps to get your printer reconnected and scanning again.

1. Restore Wi-Fi Setup Mode on the Printer

If your printer lost its connection after switching networks or devices:

  • On the printer control panel, go to Wireless Settings.
  • Select Restore Network Settings.
  • This will reset the Wi-Fi and enable setup mode (blue light should blink).

2. Use macOS Built-in Driver (AirPrint)

macOS 15 (Sequoia) supports your printer via AirPrint, even if HP doesn’t list a dedicated driver.

Steps:

  1. Go to System SettingsPrinters & Scanners.
  2. Click Add Printer → select your OfficeJet 8600 from the list.
  3. Ensure Use: AirPrint is selected.
  4. If it doesn’t appear, connect via USB temporarily to complete setup.

3. Fix Serial Number Recognition Issue

HP’s support site may not recognize older models by serial number alone. Try entering the product number instead:

  • You can find it on the back of the printer or in the Settings > Printer Info menu.
  • Example format: CN577A or N911g

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
