HP Printer Does Not Load Paper but Makes Noise

If your HP printer makes noise but does not pick up paper, try these steps in order:

  1. Reset the printer

    • Turn off the printer.
    • Unplug the power cord from the printer and wall outlet.
    • Wait 60 seconds.
    • Plug the printer directly into a wall outlet and turn it back on.
  2. Check and reload the paper

    • Remove the paper stack.
    • Check the tray for small obstructions.
    • Use only 10 to 25 sheets of plain, unused paper.
    • Do not use paper that is bent, torn, dusty, damp, wrinkled, or curled.
    • Load the paper and adjust the paper width guide so it rests against the stack.
  3. Clean the paper pick rollers

    • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
    • Locate the gray paper pick rollers in the input tray area.
    • Clean them with a lightly dampened cotton swab using bottled or distilled water.
    • Let them dry for 10 to 15 minutes before reconnecting power.
  4. Clean the rollers from the printer control panel
For supported HP Deskjet 1050/2050 models:

    • Turn on the printer and remove paper from the tray.
    • Press and hold Power.
    • Press Cancel 3 times.
    • Press Start Color Copy 7 times.
    • Release Power.
    • After that, load paper and repeat:
      • Hold Power
      • Press Cancel 3 times
      • Press Start Color Copy 8 times
      • Release Power
  5. Check paper settings

    • Make sure the paper size and type in the print settings match what is loaded in the tray.
  6. If the printer makes a grinding noise

    • Check for paper jams or foreign objects in the input tray, output tray, rear access door, or inside the printer.
    • Make sure the carriage can move freely.
    • Place the printer on a flat, level surface.

If the issue continues after these steps, HP recommends service or repair, especially if there is a grinding noise.

If your printer has had a lot of use possibly the rollers have hardened and you need a roller kit
