I changed my network name and password.  Trying to reset/restore network setting on my printer - Officejet 8650 All in One. But it is grayed out and says This feature has been locked by the person who set up the computer.  How can I bypass this or get my printer to be re-added to the new network?

@Kelly9550, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

If your OfficeJet 8650 is showing the message “This feature has been locked by the person who set up the computer” and the Restore Network Settings option is grayed out, it likely means Administrator Settings have been enabled on the printer, restricting changes to network configuration.

Here’s how you can bypass this and reconnect your printer to the new Wi-Fi network:

Option 1: Restore Network Settings via Printer Control Panel

Access the Embedded Web Server (EWS):

  • Find the printer’s current IP address by tapping the Wireless icon on the printer’s control panel.
  • Open a browser on your PC and enter the IP address (e.g., http://192.168.1.5).

Log in as Administrator:

  • If prompted, enter the Admin password. If you don’t know it, try leaving it blank or use the default (often admin).
  • If the password was set and forgotten, proceed to Option 2 below.

Unlock Network Settings:

  • Navigate to Settings > Security > Administrator Settings.
  • Uncheck any boxes that restrict access to Network Settings.
  • Save changes and reboot the printer.

Option 2: Restore Factory Defaults (Resets Admin Lock)

This will reset all custom settings including network, fax, and security configurations.

On the printer’s control panel, go to:

  • Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Defaults

Confirm the reset. The printer will restart.

After reboot, go to:

  • Setup > Network Setup > Wireless Setup Wizard
  • Select your new Wi-Fi network and enter the password.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!

thank you so much!  the IP address is not there - it says "not connected".  What do I do now?

@Kelly9550, Thanks for the update! Since your printer says "Not Connected" and doesn't show an IP address, it means it's no longer connected to your Wi-Fi network. No worries, you can still reset the network settings and reconnect it manually.

Here’s what to do next:

Method: Restore Network Settings from the Printer Control Panel

  1. On the printer’s touchscreen:
  • Tap Home > Setup (gear icon).
  • Go to Printer Maintenance or Settings > Restore.
  • Select Restore Network Settings.

Alternative: Full Factory Reset (Unlocks All Settings)

This will reset the printer to factory defaults, including admin locks and network settings.

From the printer’s touchscreen:

  • Tap Home > Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore.
  • Choose Restore Factory Defaults.
  • Confirm the reset.

After the printer restarts:

  • Go to Setup > Network Setup > Wireless Setup Wizard.
  • Select your new Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and enter the new password.

Optional: Use HP Smart App/HP App to Reconnect

If the touchscreen is still locked or unresponsive:

Download the HP Smart app on your phone or PC:

Open the app and click Set up a new printer.

Follow the on-screen steps to connect the printer to your new Wi-Fi.

I hope this helps!
