my new hp laser jet mfp m140w ; serial is #[edited]doesnt seem to be recognized by windows 10.   my former hp wireless printer was model  HP laser jet pro mfp m29w (serial is #[edited], device no longer connected to wireless network.)  now, new printer ( m140w) will not connect to wireless  network. i believe this because windows sees the former printer(m29w as serial# [edited](my new printer;s serial #) that will not connect to wireless network)

HOW DO I FIX THIS AND CONNECT MY M140W TO MY WIRELESS NETWORK?

@budgie4, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you're having trouble connecting your new HP LaserJet MFP M140w to Wi-Fi while Windows 10 still recognizes the old HP LaserJet Pro MFP M29w, let's go through a clear, step-by-step process to resolve the issue.

Step-by-Step Fix

Remove the Old Printer (M29w) from Windows

  1. Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
  2. Find the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M29w, click on it, and then choose Remove device.
  3. Restart your PC to ensure it's fully cleared out.

Reset the New Printer's Network Settings

This will clear any old network attempts from the M140w:

  1. On the printer control panel, press and hold the Wireless button for about 20 seconds until the printer resets the wireless settings (the wireless light will blink).
  2. Wait for the Wireless light to start blinking, indicating that it’s ready to connect.

Connect M140w to Wi-Fi

Use the HP Smart app (recommended):

  1. On your PC or phone, download and install the HP Smart app.
  2. Open the app and click “Set up a new printer.”
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions; the app will detect your printer if the wireless light is blinking.
  4. Choose your Wi-Fi network and enter the password when prompted.
  5. HP Smart will send those credentials to the printer and finalize the setup.

Note: If prompted to enable Bluetooth, say yes—it’s used temporarily to detect nearby printers.

Verify Connection

Once setup is complete:

  1. The Wi-Fi light on your printer should stop blinking and stay solid.
  2. In HP Smart, you should see your M140w listed as "Ready."
  3. In Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners, Windows should now list the M140w.

If HP Smart fails to see the printer:

  1. Connect the printer to your PC via a USB cable temporarily.
  2. During the HP Smart setup, it will allow you to switch to a wireless connection.
  3. Once setup is complete, you can unplug the USB cable.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

@budgie4, You're welcome! Thanks for the update — that helps narrow things down.

If the M29w doesn’t show up under Printers & Scanners, Windows may still be holding onto its drivers or background device profile, which can confuse the setup of the new printer. Here’s what you can do:

Step 1: Check for the M29w in "Devices and Printers"

This older interface sometimes shows hidden devices:

  1. Press Windows + R, type control printers, and press Enter.
  2. Look for HP LaserJet Pro MFP M29w.
  3. If you see it, right-click > Remove device.

If it’s still not there, move on.

Step 2: Clear Old Drivers

Let’s remove leftover drivers from the M29w that could be causing confusion.

💡 Do this carefully – just the old printer:

Press Windows + R, type printui /s /t2, and hit Enter.

  • In the Print Server Properties window, look under Installed Printer Drivers.
  • If you see anything like HP LaserJet M29w, select it and click Remove.

>If prompted, choose Remove driver and driver package.

  • Restart your computer.

Step 3: Install the M140w Cleanly via HP Smart

Now that the old printer is cleared:

  • Ensure the HP LaserJet MFP M140w’s wireless light is blinking.
  • Open the HP Smart app (install it from the Microsoft Store if you haven’t).
  • Click “Set up a new printer.”
  • Follow the instructions to connect it to your Wi-Fi.

I hope this helps!

In step2, there were no HP LaserJet M29w printer drivers shown by step2 actions. the M410W blue light, is blinking, new version of HPSmart is installed and actions stated in step 3 were done, but system is still seeing remnants of the m29w printer shows the model# and serial# of M410W.  when i try to add the 410w printer manually; it searches, but cant find anything.  printer is on same network as PC I am using and I get option to install via IP addr and seaech again.   How can this happen???????????????????   now what??????????????????????????

U r not going to believe this..  USER error,  i  was using the m29w instead of the  m140w printer.   When i was working with the m140w,  the m140w connected to wireless network and i was able to add it to hpsmart
