I got a new router and when I try to connect my printer it says wifi setup is locked by the person who set up the printer.  That would be me.

Hi @jillg8,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP printer will not connect to a new Wi-Fi network and shows the message “Wi-Fi setup is locked by the person who set up the printer”. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this and unlock Wi-Fi setup.

Understand what the message means

This message appears when Wi-Fi Direct or security settings are locking network changes.

It does not mean another person actually blocked it—only that setup must be reset.

Reset the printer’s network settings

Turn the printer on.

Press and hold the Cancel (X) button and the Wireless (📶) button together for 5 seconds.

The blue wireless light should begin blinking.

This unlocks Wi-Fi setup and clears the old router information.

Check if Wi-Fi Direct is enabled

On the printer control panel, go to Settings → Network → Wi-Fi Direct.

Turn Wi-Fi Direct OFF temporarily.

Wi-Fi Direct can block standard Wi-Fi setup if left enabled.

Restart printer and router

Power off the printer and unplug it for 60 seconds.

Restart the new router and wait until it is fully online.

Power the printer back on.

Reconnect using HP Smart

Open the HP Smart app on your phone or computer.

Select Add Printer or Set up a new printer.

Follow the prompts to connect the printer to the new Wi-Fi network.

Confirm Wi-Fi network compatibility

Make sure you are connecting to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.

Many HP printers cannot connect to 5 GHz networks.

If your router combines both bands, stay close to the printer during setup.

Disable VPNs during setup

Turn off any VPN on your phone or computer.

VPNs can prevent the app from unlocking Wi-Fi setup.

Verify the lock is removed

After reset, the printer should no longer display the “Wi-Fi setup is locked” message.

The wireless light should be blinking blue, indicating setup mode.

I hope this helps.
