lol.. went to print to see what the exact msg is (although it starts the same as what original poster posted).. but now can't print as my cartridges are apparently deleted.. even though i havent used them since last time i tried to print and they were fine then.. perhaps they just leak. lol.. i replaced them not too long ago... i am sure i have printed 20 pages since they were last replaced.

and no, printer is more than 30 days old, so warranty of no use.. although likely only used maybe 20-30 times.

thanks for your help but in the long run i think best to just toss this and something NOT hp. no end of grief with this junky thing since i bought it.

I have a HP Officejet 6700 with exactly the same problem,  the printer is always on 24/7 and goes into sleep mode on its own if not in use.

However almost everytime I goto print something, which is infrequently, the printer decides to "check device" and displays a message on the printer screen saying "please wait, checking device.." and this process takes I would say 3-5 minutes.

This is very annoying, as others have said, particularly when you want to quickly print something.

This printer has also done it since it was new,  originally thought it must be because it was new etc, but like a year later its still doing it all the time..

VERY fustrating and a real turnoff HP

Is your printer still in warranty? You can check with HP's warranty tool here.  The warranty is normally for a year.  My mention of thirty days was the period from when a repalcement printer is delivered to you to when you need to have the original returned.

I have the same printer with almost the same problem, only mine's been stuck in "Checking device" mode for 24 hours now. I only use it for faxing, so I just replaced the black ink cartridge, but that didn't help. Do all the color cartridges need to be replaced, too, even though I don't use them. The status said they were empty before the "Checking device" demon took over. They must have dried up or something.

Ok, back here looking to see if HP finally fixed their stupid printer to stop it from endlessly checking status or whatever the hell it's doing rather than the job I purchased it to do.

I have decided I'm the stupid one, for purchasing an HP printer when I knew better.  I figured after my last stupid HP printer that I would never buy another HP, but after 10 years decided they might have gotten things worked out.  Nope....so I was stupid yet again and bought another stupid HP printer that I guess I'm going to chunk into the trash because I'm tired of it sitting right here daily reminding me what a stupid sap I was for buying HP again.

Hopefully I won't be so stupid next time and that I have learned from my  2 stupid mistakes and wont make the same stupid mistake again and be so stupid as to buy another stupid HP printer!

Please God, let me have learned my stupid lesson!
