I have the problem, too.  The problem developed when I tried to upgrade the firmware for my HP Color LaserJet 4700.  The printer is connected to our office network.  This problem is driving me crazy, but here is what I discovered so far.  This description is valid only for printers connected to a network.

1.   Disconnect the network cable from the printer.

2.  Cycle the power (turn it off, then back on) on the printer.

3.  Do not reconnect the network cable yet.

4.  Does the error still come up?  For me, it didn't, so the rest of this instruction is valid only for this result (no 49.4CF2 after disconnecting network cable and off-on cylcing of power.)

5.  If you are running a Windows operating system, go to Devices and Printers (you can access it in Control Panel).

6.  Click on the HP 4700 printer for which you are getting the 49.4CF2 error.

7.  Go to See what's printing if you are running Windows 7, maybe even Windows 8.  If you are running a different version of Windows, you need to get to the little screen where it shows the print jobs.

8.  Hopefully, you will see a print job (maybe more than one depending on how many times you tried to install the driver software).

9.  Kill (cancel) the firmware update print jobs.  Make sure they are gone before you continue.

10.  Reconnect the network cable.

11.  The 49.4CF2 error should not come up.  At least now, you can use the printer.

12.  I am still working on how to get the new firmware installed.  I will post that information (if I fgure it out) if anyone finds this post to be worth anything, so please let me know if it's helpful.

13.  My job keeps me really busy and stressed out, so I don't want to take the time to write this stuff down if it's not helping anybody.

14.  This kind of problem is so frustrating and I can't believe that these things aren't tested thoroughly enough to avoid this kind of problem.  I don't have any of these problems on my Mac, iPhone, or computers running Linux.

15.  Thanks for reading this, and hopefully, it will help.

If you have a hard 49 error i.e even with network disconnected then I would plug USB into the printer and look at pushing firmware that way.

In many cases you can download the easy firmare utility, if the drivers are loaded it will show the printer in the utility and it's just a case of ticking the printer, if your printer drivers are loaded but on Network port then you can right click the printer, go into properties and select a USB port to redirect it, this often works.

If you can ping your printer then you might be able to push the firmware but in some cases you can't so it's best to go back to cable connection and push it locally.

I'm not too sure where you got the steps you completed, instructions on how to deploy the firmware are included in every firmware download, it will normally detail any/all methods you can use.

In your case you say removing the network cable and power cycling shows no error, this would suggest the printer is being issued commands either from print jobs (PDF files are normally the main culprit) or from a network device causing the 49 error , in that situation I would connect directly to the printer with a cross over cable from a pc (set on the same subnet), push the firmware with ftp on the printer IP and you should  be upgraded easily.

Once it's all complete then reconnect to the main network, if you still get 49 errors when connected then I would use something like Wireshark to see if I can capture what's happening.

I don't think your issue is particularly Windows or HP related, you have a 49 error when your on the network so the issue might be nothing more than someone printing PDF files which can't be interpreted or the network has a fault and is sending erroneous data to the printer.

Sometimes moving a port can show if it's stable or not then fault find from there, you can push files with ftp to fault find at that level, when you ftp to the printer using your browser drag and drop basic PDF or TXT files to the PORT folder and if they print then you have confirmed operation and you can fault find outwards from there.

Thanks for your post. I found that the HP Firmware Updater Utility hangs despite the fact that the GUI interface tells you it has completed. You must look at print jobs to see it has hung. Needless to say I had already replaced the LAN cable and hub the unit uses without success. The clue was rebooting without the LAN cable attached. I will attempt to flash again now that I know how to get out of this jam.
