Factory defaults now reset.  Just printed a brand-new Configuration Report.  All three trays now say "any size / any type".  That's not what we're looking for, right?

Interesting, I have never seen tray 2 default to that. MAybe HP changed something there. What about the sensor flags in my previous post?

Sensor flags seem to be of different sizes in the two trays, but both sensor flags are clearly descended, not stuck.

Has there been any solution to your problem? I am running into the exact same issue.  Where it will default print from tray 2 and totally look over tray 3.

HP Recommended

No, no solution yet....

well if i happen to come across anything i'll send it your way.

I had a similar issue and needed to have tray 3 available so Rx scripts would not print if tray 2 was empty. Try this:

1. Go to the printer properties > Device Settings tab

2. Under Installable Options, look for Tray 3: not installed

3. Click it and change to installed and apply

4. In the Form To Tray Assignment, Tray 3 will still say not available but should no longer be grayed out

5. Click and change it to your paper type and apply.

Hope this helps

I had the same problem and seemed to have (cross my fingers) fixed it, at least for now.  I checked the settings and made sure Tray 3 was 'Installed' (Properties>Device Settings>Installable Options).  I went to Preferences>Printing Shortcuts>Paper Source and confirmed that Tray 3  was set.  Then Preferences>Paper/Quality>Paper Source and confirmed that Tray 3 was set.  Then....in Printing Properties>Advanced Settings>Print Default tab, I set it to Tray 3.  The Paper Sensor flag was down when the tray was removed although the LED screen did not indicate "Load Paper"; just the "Ready" state.  I then turned off and unplugged the printer, pressed the On/Off button (which flashed), then plugged it back in and turned it on.  Voila, it now prints from Tray 3.

For us, this printer is installed as two separate printers with different names so we can use Tray 3 for bulk printing and Tray 2 for specialized printing.
