Under Settings, Sleep Mode, my only option is 5, 10 or 15 minutes, there is no "0" setting.  My printer goes to sleep and does not wake up, need to be unpluged, power button does nothing?

You have to go into the "System Menu", then "System Mode Time Out."  Set it to "0".

Sorry for not understanding, but where do I find "System Menu"?

Take a look at IslipHP's comment on this page

A lot of people said that workaround solved their problems, though it didn't work for my 7640.

Press the ‘Copy’ symbol
Locate the 'Home' and 'Back/Return' symbols
Press ‘Home’, ‘Home’, ‘Back/Return’, ‘Home’, ‘Home’ - be careful as after the first press of the 'Home' symbol, the symbol lights go out!
If correctly selected you will get the 'Engineering Menu'
Select 'Underware Menu'
Use 'left' arrow and select 'System Menu' and 'OK' - using the 'left' arrow is quicker as the option is nearer the left than right.
Use 'left' arrow and select' System Mode Timeout' and 'OK'
Reset to 0 seconds using the 'Down' arrow - need to press repeatedly, hence start with the least time to begin with!
Once set at '0', use the red 'X' to work back out of the 'Engineering Menu' until the 'normal' screen appears.

Hello everyone.  I found this thread the other day (July 1,2016) and have to say ~ I'm fairly dissapointed that this problem continues to exist at least a year after other relevent threads were poster citing this issue of the 7640 refusing to come out of sleep mode.  Thught I found a solution by accessing the system menu burried deep, deep, DEEP under cover, but alas, NOT!  My main office computer is a direct USB connection to the printer, so I KNOW it's not a wireless/router/DHCP issue...  Set the system mode time out to 0 and ensured that the sleep mode was DISABLED.  Hope to hear from someone (especially someone from HP) with a solution to this problem.  Otherwise, it's going back to Best Buy and I'll get a different brand ASAP.

Sincerely,

John Lardino

never got past step  one...This is now hour 8 trying to solve this...I am disabled and  when on win 7 never had a problem..BUt this printer cannot be seen by HP SOFTWARE have downloaded tons of it....BUt my computer sees it...Makes no sense..

It is connected to a WSD port and when I click on CONFIGURE I get an error occurred during port configuration. This operation is not configured....

I have an envy 7640 and last time or under seven it said envy 7640...

FOR THE PORT it says 2016-10-07_13-32-40 hp printer.jpg

This was put in last night by scan doctor or hppiw.....I had to borrow a 75 foot cord at one point to hook printer to the routher... Both computer and printer are same distance from routher...Speed is 30mbps cable....WIN 10 8 gb mem

THe old install had envy 7640 and not the wsd stuff....That was when it worked fine.. I am disabled and To get to the printer and keep plugging it in and unplugging it is an hassel and very painful....I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY HELP...

I have tried setting the sleep mode to zero but it will NOT go below 5 minutes.  This is sucking all the ink out of the cartridges because it does the ink calabration code everytime i reconnect.  I am changing ink cartridges every 10 days! Could someone please walk me through the sleep mode setting?  It does not appearto be an option on my recently purchased printer.  Is this a scam to get me to buy more ink?

I just followed the directions below...too soon to determine if this worked.

When you are resetting the system timeout to "0"; you can HOLD the down arrow...it is much faster. It will start decreasing in increments of "10" then increments of "100" *Do NOT go past zero or it will go to 63,*** if I remember correctly.

Be sure to hit "OK" after setting timeout to "0" before hitting the  red "X" to back out of settings.
