When my HP ancient 4400c scanner died, I threw it out but kept its C9861A Transparancy Adaptor (XPA) and template. I now want to use the C9861A to merely backlight 35mm slides to be scanned on a non-HP scanner. The XPA has written on it "9V 500mA" and its power cord seems to have some sort of PS2 or mini-DIN connector at the end.
- Can I merely apply voltage across the XPA power cord connector's pins and have the unit light up? Can I remove the connector and apply voltage across the power cord wires?
- Does HP or a third party sell a wall power adapter for the XPA? If so, how can I get one?
- What is the XPA power cord's connector part number and pinout in case I want to jerry-rig something?
- Will a 9Vdc supply capable of generating greater than 500mA work for me, or do I have some leeway on the voltage and current specification?
I cannot find the answers to these questions on hp.com or anywhere on the internet.
Thanks,
Ken

Ken, i'll try to help you.1- Yes,you can remove the connector and apply voltage across the power cord wires. The red wire is +(positive) and the white wire is - (negative). 2- Use any kind of wall power adapter with 9 volts, minimum 500 mA or higher 800mA, 1000mA, 2000mA etc...3- I don't know. 4- 9 volts with minimum 500 mA

Is there an adapter to go from the C9861A XPA to USB? Tried a standard PS/2 Keyboard/Mouse adapter to USB and it will not plug into it, the pins and guide do not match. I replaced the old Scanner with an HP 8610 OfficeJet Pro and would like to use this transparency adapter with it.

Ok, I hard wired a voltage supply / step down transformer 120VA to 9VDC, followed your wire color suggestions, the Scanjet XPA lights up really nice. I placed it on my HP Officejet Pro 8610 and it scanned the unit but the area of the negatives was all white blank. How can I get the negatives or color slides to come up correctly on the scan?
