I have an HP Deskjet F4480 printer. I only use it to print documents with black ink. Is there a way to only use black ink in this printer (which is a lot less expensive)? Thank you for any help you can provide.

Greyscale is more useful for printers that have four or more cartridges. You can find out about the feature by clicking on this link, but I'm not positive how helpful it will be for you.
Inserting a black cartridge into the color slot will not allow it to act as a backup cartridge. The printer will see that it is not a color cartridge and refuse to read or use it.
Please let me know if this resolves your issues.

Hey @Ljlefevre,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums.
I see that you are trying to print in black only from your Deskjet F4480 All-in-One Printer. You should be able to print in black only by removing the color cartridge from the printer.
Please let me know if this answers your questions or resolves your issues. If it does, please click on Accept Solution. If you appreciate my help, please click on the thumbs up icon. Both icons are below this post.

Thank you for your reply. I refilled the black ink cartridge. Is there a special way to set it for gray scale or will it automatically do that when I have removed the color cartridge? Also, could I fill another black ink cartridge and load it where the color cartridge goes to have more accessibility to black ink?
Thank you.
