HP 4630
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My printer works just fine! In itself... But...

Microsoft updated my computer from Windows 7 to Windows 10, and after a while the "activity line" furthest down on the screen does not work properly anymore. The "Start/stopp-button" does not work and the Search function does not work either. Therefore I cannot access the programs I want anymore... And Microsoft does not seem to find the solution!

So what I would like to find out is how I can find and start the HP Scan program e.g. via the file Explorer, so I perhaps could make a shortcut to the program avaialable on the sceen. Or ANY other way.

Please help!

Hi @GoranPersson,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

I see that you're unable to locate the HP Scan icon for your HP Officejet 4630 e-All-in-One Printer after upgrading to Windows 10. I would be happy to help you and please remember to return to this thread and mark 'Accept as Solution', if I have successfully helped you resolve the issue. If you wish to say 'thanks' for my effort to help, click the 'thumbs up' to give me a Kudos.

I understand the frustration this has caused you. Windows 10 has made come changes, which removed the icon.

To create a shortcut follow these steps:
1. Search Windows for your HP Officejet 4630 Printer.
2. In the search results select the HP Officejet 4630 Printer. This opens the HP Printer Assistant.
3. Click on 'Scan a Document or Photo", HP Scan opens.
4. While HP Scan is open, right-click on HP Scan on the taskbar and 'Pin this program to the taskbar' to create a shortcut.

In addition, you could try using these scanning workarounds:
Scanning workarounds
Scan with the Windows Scan app (Windows 10)
Scan with the HP Scan and Capture app (Windows 8 and 10)
Scan with Paint
Scan with Windows Fax and Scan

As for the other issues, that you're experiencing, you will need to contact Microsoft. It sounds like the Windows 10 upgrade got corrupted and didn't fully install.

I hope this helps. Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. I look forward to hearing from you. Good Luck! 🙂

Thank you Drakster for trying to help me. However, it does not work...

I do get the HP Scan up and running via Control Panel, Show printers and devices (I use a Swedish version of Windows so my translations may not be quite correct) and I get the HP Printer Assistant running. However, the Printer Assistant does not offer me a scan function... So I try Tools and then Hp Scan Doctor and then after many trials I get the HP Scan up and running (which is really what I want)...

Then I try your right click tip. But it does not work, since in my version of Windows 10  right click on the toolbar does not work.... Nothing happens! Not on any of the icons. I try to drag the HP Scan icon on to the desk top, but that does not work either.

So, back to "square 1", sad to say...

Hi @GoranPersson,

Thanks for the reply and explaining what is happening in more detail. The issue you're experiencing is a problem in Windows 10.

I have found some information that might be useful to you.

Here’s how to fix Start Menu, Cortana, and Taskbar issues occurring in Windows 10

One issue, which has frequently been surfacing on Microsoft Forums and Reddit, is the inoperability of the Taskbar and all the features linked to it, such as the Start Menu and Cortana. After a certain period of time, all three stop responding to the user’s interactions even though the rest of the system continues to perform optimally. Microsoft is well-aware of the issue and is working to resolve it. However, until then you can try these temporary fixes to resolve the issue.

How To Fix Cortana, Search, And Start Menu Issues In Windows 10
First of all, you need to kill the erroneous processes that are causing the problems. Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to launch the Task Manager. Locate Cortana or Search from the list of currently running processes and click on End Task. The processes will re-launch and this time around, functionality will be restored.

For a more permanent fix, you can try any of the below methods:

Method 1
Step 1: Press Windows Key + R to bring up the Run dialog box.
Step 2: Type in powershell and press Enter.
Step 3: Right-click on the PowerShell icon from the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator

Method 2
Step 1: Right-click the Start button and select Command Prompt (Admin) from the context menu.
Step 2: Type Powershell in Command Prompt and press Enter.
Step 3: Paste the following text in the Powershell window and press Enter. Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
Wait for the command to run and ignore the red error prompts if they arise. The Start Menu should be operational now.

Search and Cortana malfunctioning can be attributed to a corrupted search index database in most cases. To fix it, all you need to do is delete and rebuilt the Search Index. To do this, head to the Control Panel. Locate the Indexing Options utility and launch it. The utility will display a list of all the locations and applications currently being indexed. Check to see if all the drives and folders are being indexed. To add an item, press Modify and you’ll be presented with a list of all locations on the PC; tick ones you require and click OK.

How To Rebuild Windows Search Index On Windows 10
Even if all the correct locations are being indexed, a malfunctioning Search Index can render the Search function useless. Before we delve into the method, keep in mind that the index rebuilding process may take a while and will affect system performance as well until completion. To rebuild the Index, open Indexing Options. Click on Advanced Options and press the Rebuild button in the Troubleshooting section. Click OK on the confirmation prompt and the process will start.

Here's another thread with a solution.

If the issue persists, please contact Microsoft.
