I have OSX 10.10 Yosemite and a Envy 4500 printer. I have tried all the solutions in the support page. I uninstall and reinstall the software several times and I am still unable to scan to my computer. When I use the HP scan app the following message appears: "HP ENVY 4500 series-AirPrint is currently unavailable. Please check if it is turned on and connected, or try again later." If I tried to scan from my printer it says "Scan failes. An error occurred while communicating with the scanner" and a "Connection error" on the printer

Hi @lachan , welcome to the community! I hope I can help you out today 🙂
I read about the scanning problems you're having, and it seems like you may have selected the AirPrint driver, opposed to the standard driver.
Here are some steps I would recommend:
- Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system
- Repair disk permissions
- Restart the Mac
- Download and install the full driver here: HP ENVY 4500 series Full Feature Software and Drivers
Try scanning now and it should work:)
Let me know the outcome please and thank you 🙂

Hi Rainbow. Thank you for your answer but I had tried resetting and installing the driver as 4500 envy software previously and it didn't work. Regardless, I tried again, following all the steps that you mention : resetting the printing system, repairing the disk, and I also erased all the previous hp software in my mac and I checked that there was not any hp activity in the activity monitor before restarting the computer. It did not work.
This is a message that I get while installing the printer so I wonder if it has something to do with the problem
This is what I choose as driver instead of the Airprint one
And these are the messages that I get when I try to scan
I installed the hp scan software but when I try to enable scan to computer this is what i get
Thank you for your help

Thanks for your response, lachan
I have some questions for you and some things to try, please get back to me when you can with the results and answers. 🙂
When you make a copy from the front panel of the printer, does the printer produce a copy without any errors, or is there apparent issues with copies?
Are you able to scan successfully when a USB cable is plugged in?
Have you tried scanning using different methods, such as System Preferences, Image Capture, and Preview? Do any of them scan wireless or wired?
Also try power cycling the network devices:
Turn off the printer and computer and unplug the router for 1 minute (do not press any buttons on the router).
Plug the router back in and wait another minute, next turn on the printer and computer. Try scanning again.
Please let me know the information above.
Cheers 🙂

Hello. Thank you for your help
I can make copies and I know the scanner works because I can scan to my iPad thru the AiO Remote app from hp. I don't have the USB cable, I guess that I lost it because I have never use it before. I tried to scan from my mac using system preferences, image capture and preview and I got this message.
I also tried to scan from the hp scan and I got this message
I tried power cycling the network devices and I also reset the network in the printer but nothing works.
Help!!!

Hello lachan.
I have a few more suggestions for you that should work. I would suggest a scrub first, repair disk permissions again, and reinstall the software. Please ensure you power the computer off, and restart it before you go ahead with the re-install. If that does not have you scanning, then I suggest a manual uninstall of the software. Here are the steps and links to help you out.
1. See this post from @Sunshyn2005 for help to do a scrub: 8600 Plus, Mac OS 10.8.5 scanner won't connect to wireless
3. Power off the computer, and power back on
4. Install the driver and software here: HP ENVY 4500 series Full Feature Software and Drivers
5. Test a scan through all methods, including HP Scan
6. If the scanning still does not work, see this post on how to do the manual uninstall:
Please keep me posted on the outcome, I am crossing my fingers for a resolution! 🙂

Hi. I tried your suggestion and they did not work. I also tried the manual uninstall but that did not work either. I found an USB cable and I can scan when I use it so I was wondering if my network security settings have anything to do with the problem. Thank you for your help.

Hi there,
Yes, the router settings could be something to check out.
If you are using WPA2 security, switch to WPA personal.
Also, the following ports need to be un-blocked:
Incoming (UDP) ports : 137, 138, 161, 427
Outgoing (TCP) ports : 137, 139, 427, 9100, 9220, 9500

Hi. It was not the router either but I was finally able to fix it.:smileyvery-happy: I uninstalled all the hp components, I resetted the printing system, I reapaired the disk permissions and restarted the mac. After the system was clean of all hp drivers, I installed the printer by going to system preferences/printers. I just clicked the add a printer button and I let the mac find the driver and when it did instead of using the Airprint, I chose 4500 series. Aparently the problem is when I download the driver from the hp website. I do not have the hp utility or the hp scan but I am finally able to scan wirelessly from the printer queue. Thank you for your help
