Recently we undertook a project to correct the Cartrige Empty Replace Cartridge error message presented on a DesignJet T790 24in PS Plotter.

The plotter would reject the half full Magenta cartridge and then rejected the new replacement cartridge.

(both carts. were well within warranty dates  one expires 6/2015)

On inspection of the plotter I noted that magenta and black ink had been leaking into the bottom of the ink supply station.

Further inspection revealed a cracked Ink Supply Crane of the Ink tubes.

Diagnostic test of the Ink Supply station failed.

So I replaced both the ink tubes and the ink supply station with new parts.

Ink supply station now passes it's diagnostic tests.

but...

The plotter still rejects the Magenta cartridge as out of ink.  When I look further into the status on the plotter under the supplies menu, I find it is rejecting because the cartridge is out of warranty.  Like I said, it is not.

If the plotter is allowed to continue running (it of course wont plot or allow for the purge of the new tubes) it will then result in an error where any or all of the following ink cartridges are out of ink

Magenta

Yellow

Cyan

All of these in the supplies menu will then show as Out Of Warranty.

Unless I can find either the Out Of warranty override for this plotter or another cure,

I beleive I am left with no choice but to replace the Main PCA board.

Any thoughts?  I am stuck on this one and do not want the customer buying parts they do not need.

Hi,

You are looking at the correct part, the Main PCA.

Try this First:

1- Remove the ink cartridges

2- Do a EERom reset

3- Install the ink cartridge, BUT, use a new Magenta, Yellow and Cyan ink cartridge. Do not use those old cartridges again.

That should help with the problem.

If you install back any of those defective ink cartridges, you will go back to square 1.

If the printer keeps rejecting the cartridges after the EERom reset, you might need to install a new Main PCA.

T790 24", non-PS.

I got a message that the MK cartridge was empty when it was actually still about half full.  The plotter would not print until the problem was resolved.  Replaced the MK cartridge with a new one and still got the same message, and still would not print.

At the same time, my Magenta cartridge was very low but not completely empty, reporting 4ml remaining, but there were no messages concerning the Magenta.  Just on a hunch, I replaced the Magenta cartridge with a new one.  After shutting down and restarting the plotter, the messages about the empty MK cartridge were cleared, all cartridges and their ink levels are properly recognized, and everything is now fine.

It appears that the firmware (07 xxxxxx 06 xxxx 00.2), or maybe a hard-wiring issue, causes the plotter to confuse the Magenta and MK cartridges.  Having a nearly-empty Magenta causes the plotter to think that the MK is completely-empty, and it then refuses to print.

Hi

For the T790 plotters the cartridges COULD NOT BE REJECTED because of the warranty status but the ink Levels (empty message). Now, you have mentioned that you replaced the ink tube system and the Ink Supply Station, at this point I would like to know if the printer successfully completed the purge of the new tubes after installing the new Ink tube system.

In regards to the cartridge rejection message, have you checked the cartridge information from the web interface of the printer? At this point is very important to check on the INSTALLATION DATE shown by the printer, If any of the cartridges show 1969 or 1970 these cartridges might be defective so that you will need to replace them.

How to replace them if 1969 or 1970 error?

From the Diagnostic mode you will have to perform the EEROM reset to replace the defective cartridges.

If the problem persists using the new cartridges after the EEROM reset, you might have to replace the Main Board.

I am assuming that you know how to get into the diagnostics mode and how to check the cartridge information from the printer's EWS (using the printer's IP address from a web browser)

Important: Before applying the recommended action plan make sure the unit is running the latest firmware version
