Originall had a paper jam but that's cleared. Now printer hanging in a state 'checking printer' for several days, any attempt to interupt or turn off gives message' This maintenance cannot be interupted'

Hi @Barrett4451,
Welcome to the HP Forums!
I see that the checking printer status never changes with your HP Officejet Pro 8500A plus. I am happy to help!
I would recommend a hard reset, by going to this post, How to perform a Hard Reset, by @Rich1. It is important, that the printer's power cable is plugged directly into the wall outlet, and not a surge protector. See this article, Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector, for more information. This applies to Inkjet printers as well.
Otherwise, I would also check that you are using Genuine HP Ink Cartridges, and that none of your Cartridges are empty, or low.
If this does not resolve your issue, then the problem is a hardware malfunction of the printer, and it will need to be serviced/or replaced. Please contact HP, phone support for further assistance. If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get the support number for your region. Country-language selector.
Best of luck!

I've worked with a good number of these printers. this kind of thing is often related to the formatter board going bad and likely have to replace the printer.
'course i've just been a printer tech for the past several years and seen some thousands of printers of every make and model...
i could be wrong...
