Hello@Arctic -Wanderer,
Welcome to the HP Forums!
I have read your post and understand that you need assistance in making the printer work for Windows 10 OS. I will definitely help you.
I have found some useful steps which ideally helps you fix the issue.
I request you to execute the steps and check if that improves the PC performance.
Uninstall the printer
- In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
- Select your HP Printer
- Select Uninstall
- In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
- In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'
- Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
- Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
- Click on the "Drivers" tab
- Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
- Select Ok
- Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
- Close Devices and Printers
Then use the link below and install the driver and check if that works.
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/COL30196/dj-109083-2/DJ_SF_NonNet_Full_Win_WW_140_404-4.exe
Please make sure to disconnect the printer from the PC if connected through a USB connection before executing the steps.
Hope that fixes your issue. Let me know for more.

I have carried out the instructions below with mixed results!!!
All went well to the "Configure Product" stage which took about 15 minutes. After which it failed with the attached error report.
However it seems to work, but I ave not switched it all off and on again I'll try this and post a report on Wednesday 1 march 2017

Hello, @Arctic-Wanderer
Thanks for the update! I would like to jump in with a suggestion 🙂
Going through your post, it seems that there is a compatibility issue with the printer drivers and your windows 10 environment. The issue might have been caused by recent updates on your computer. I would suggest you a workaround by changing the compatibility on the drivers. Follow the steps below (Check the fig below for ref):
- Unplug the USB cable from the printer and computer if present.
- Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Deskjet printer entries (including the HP solution center) and uninstall them. (Including the HP solution center)
- Restart your computer.
- Go to http://hp.care/2lTymVV and download and save the full feature driver file (Do not run the file, just download and save it to your desktop or download folder)
- Now go to the download location, right-click on the driver file and select “Properties”.
- Under “Compatibility” tab, check the box which says “Run this program in compatibility mode for” and select “Windows 8” (In fig, I have selected Windows 7, but make sure you select Windows 8).
- Also, select the box “Run this program as an administrator”.
- Apply and save the settings.
- Now, double-click and run the program.
That should get the printer working. Let me know!
Cheers 🙂

I have NOT tried the suggestion from DVortex (lack of time) however from the previous suggestion of deleting all previous drivers and downloading new one at first all appeared ok.
BUT the printer when under Windows 10 will not print magenta!!!!! AND the Windows XP machine will now only print black and white! I have made NO changes to the Windows XP machine.
