Thats what I thought. Was hoping I could just order the main board. Thanks for taking the time to go over this with me Tim. I'll update once that is installed. Do you think maybe I should have changed the hd at the same time? In our earlier posts i know we talked about the b revision and such, but i was never able to find out the difference even with the model number.

This is all virgin territory for me, so I don't know how to answer the question about if the HDD can be the cause of this problem. I personally, guessing that is, that if the firmware is stored on the HD, then corrupt firmware may reside on that and become a problem. I can't say this is how these things work as HP doesn't give you that type of information. It is possible the firmware is written to the main board and formatter board and not read from the HDD on each bootup.
I can say, as you probably do know, the service manual points you to the main board before the formatter replacement to fix the code you are experiencing. The only firmware update problem I've ever had is when I interrupted a DJ800 during an update and it did fry the electronics module/main board.
