This was so much fun I had to write a letter explaining how to solve it.

During install of HP Deskjet 3522 (3520 Series), under WIndows 7, Home Premium, 64bit edition, etc.

May also apply to other software device driver installations, etc...

the install would hang and then fail to install the drivers and software.

Clicking the details button would display an error message

Call to DriverPackageinstall returned error -536870141 for package C:\program files\HP\Hp deskjet 3520 series\driverstore\ngscandriver\hpwia_DJ3520.INF

To resovle this problem,

I opened the setupapi log files, typically located in

c:\Windows\INF\

The easiest way to find the file you want to open is to sort this list by date modified, and lok for the latest file.

the files I found were named:

setupapi.app.log  - the application (software) log

setupapi.dev.log  - the device (hardware) log

I recommend starting with the device log, since install errors are usually caused by device drivers being wrong...

You can double click the file to open it in notepad

That file will typically be very large, and you'll need to page down to the end of the file to see the latest log entries.

A better solution would be to rename the 2 existing files, adding .bak to the end of the filename.

Then start the installation over again.

This time when it fails, the log file will have log entries related only to the latest install attempt, so it wil be easier to read through the file.

Once the file is open in notepad, search the file (Ctrl+F) for the word 'error'.

You can also look for lines starting with !!! (3 exclamation characters)

In my instance, I found the line

!!! sto: Driver package references a missing external file 'C:\Windows\system32\drivers\usbscan.sys'

I was able to search C drive for that file, and paste it into C:\Windows\system32\drivers

repeat install again, this time it is looking for serscan.sys

repeat search & paste, repeat install, this time it finished the install without errors.

You may need to repeat the cycle until it resolves all errors, but at least you know where to look to find a more detailed explanation of what is going wrong...

I repair computer laptops and networks, personal & business customers, in Fredonia NY and surrounding areas of Buffalo NY. search for waztech.com

Hello Steve,

Thank you very much for your solution.

In this way I was able to solve my USB port problem that was there for almost 1 year.

Many specialists looked at it and could not find a solution.

Now my wireless printer is working and my USB ports.

Thanks again,

Peter

Hope you can help me.

I have a HP Officejet Pro 8600 N911a printer.

I did everything I could understand, but some of your post I didn't.  I found the files named the app. software log and the device hardware log.

I didn't understand about renaming the existing files.  Is this the two files above, and how do I rename them?  I also looked in c drive and couldn't find the C:Windows\System32\drivers\usbscan.sys.

Thanks in advance

Hey, Steve -

I have just bought an HP Deskjet 1112 printer and had the same problem as you have described. Searching my C: drive folder I found the usbscan.sys and the serscan.sys files. They were placed in a folder under C:\Windows\WinSxS. How they got there I don't know but I found them. They were located in a sub folder labled as

amd64_sti.inf_316f3856ad364e35_6.3.9600.16384_none_4a9d3173b4bda747

in that sub folder, along with usbscan.sys and serscan.sys are 4 other folders that appear to belong in the same group as those two. I cut and paste like you directed and they ended up in a UMDF file. This User-Mode Driver Framework says

"UMDF drivers operate as part of a stack of drivers that manage a device. File system drivers, display drivers, and print drivers cannot be UMDF drivers."

Do I keep the usbscan and serscan.sys folders in there or must they be cut and paste in the proper location within the

C:\Windows\system32\drivers with all the others listed?

After that I'm going to have to contact HP to let them know I get the following message when I use the CD that cam with the printer and when I try to download the drivers from their website. The message reads:

Call to DrivePackageInstall returned error -536870141 for package C:\Program Files\HP\HP Deskjet 1110 series\Driver Store\HPRestStub\HPRestStub.INF.

This does not exist in the Program Files folder. I had Microsoft analyse the disc and it found errors indicating that there are issues with the disc listing 3 errors  1) and 2) Deskjet 1110 series doesn't have a driver and 3)PrinterHP Deskjet 1110sereis is not shared with a homegroup. (The last one I'm not that worried about since I'm not shring anything with anyone on my computer because I live alone).

It appears I'm going to have to have HP send me via email the driver for HP Deskjet 1110 series so I can complete the installation

Any help you can offer here would be greatly appreciated since I like this printer and don't want to have to send it back. I've got till 4/19 before HP starts charging for Help services.

Thank you.
