The status of my printer is Ready in Control Panel. When I print, nothing happens, no printing, no error message. If I open the cover, the Resume light blinks, I close it, press the Resume button and it stops blinking. I ran the HP Print doctor wizard and it found everything normal. I changed USB cable. I tried on a Windows 8 laptop and on a Windows7 laptop. It used to run fine on Windows XP before.
Please help.

Hey @miamiparis,
It definitely is strange that your Deskjet 5440 is not printing for you, nor is it giving you any sort of error message. It's good to know that you already attempted some troubleshooting steps of you own which included trying a different USB cable and running the Print and Scan Doctor. Because this issue is affecting your Windows 8 and Windows 7 computers I have a feeling that this may be a printer hardware issue.
To start I would like to see if you can print a standalone report from just the printer itself. This will allow us to see if it truly is a hardware issue with your product. In order to print a standalone report you need to:
- Make sure that plain white paper is loaded in the input tray.
- Press and hold the Power button (
).
- While holding the Power button, press the Resume button (
) four times.
- Release the Power button (
). The self-test report prints.
If this report prints fine it does prove that hardware on your product is functioning normally. Now as I mentioned before, if the product fails to print a standalone Printer Test Report than the hardware on your machine may be defective. You may notice while trying to print the standalone Printer Test Report that additional lights may blink on the machine. If you do notice any sort of blinking light pattern on the printer can I have you take a look at the Blinking Lights support document:
Blinking Lights on the HP Deskjet 5440 Printer Series
Please be sure to let me know if these steps help to resolve your issue or not. Thanks for contacting the HP Support Forums. Good luck!

Hey @miamiparis,
Thanks for getting back to me on this.
I'm sorry to hear that your product will not function standalone. The Deskjet 5440 didn't give you any blinking light patterns when you attempted the standalone Printer Test Report?
Because we have no error state to go from for troubleshooting I'm going to have you check some standard areas where hardware issues can arise and hopefully one of these steps will resolve your issue.
The document below is for 'Carriage Jam' issues; however, it will have you check for paper jams, remove and reseat the cartridges, check that the carriage moves properly, among other helpful steps. I suggest we run each of the steps below:
The Carriage is Stuck for HP Deskjet 5420v, 5440, and 5940 Printers
Please let me know if any of these steps help to resolve your issue. Good luck!

I have the same issues.
I have installed new print cartridges. I have no paper jams. I have new cords. Win 8.1, 64 bit
I have run HP Printer Install Wizard AND HP Print and Scan Wizard.
I have tried the printer on multiple computers.
When I try to print, the "resume" light flashes and all jobs are stored in the print que.
I have tried all of the above solutions. I am not able to generate any report. The resume light just keeps flashing red, and the printer keeps returning to "offline"
The printer performs the same on all PCs
Next steps?

Hey @asmyers652,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you're also experiencing printing issues with your HP Deskjet 5440 Photo Printer. I would like to work with you today with resolving the 'resume light blinking' error state. Because you are not able to print standalone reports I do believe that what you're experiencing is a hardware issue.
When the resume light blinks on your product and the power light remains solid the following error conditions may be occuring:
- The product is out of paper.
- Paper is jammed in the product.
- One or both cartridges are low on ink.
- There is a problem with one or both cartridges.
Thank you for letting me know that you have already run through the 'carraige jam' troubleshooting steps I included in my post above. Those troubleshooting steps would have had you check for any paper jams, ensuring cartridges are loaded correctly, checking that the carriage moves, and performing a partial reset. I believe you have also ruled out cartridges as being the cause for the error state as you have installed new print cartridges. With that all being said, I'm going to have you run through some additional troubleshooting steps to resolve this error state.
The product is out of paper, or the paper is not feeding correctly:
Solution one: Load paper:
Insert a stack of paper into the paper tray with the print side down, and then slide the paper width guide inward so that it rests against the edge of the paper.
Solution two: Check the condition of the paper, and then reload it:
Paper feed issues might result from dusty, torn, wrinkled, wet, or folded paper in the tray. The quality of the paper can also make a difference.
Make sure that the stack of paper contains no fewer than 10 sheets and no more than 25 sheets of paper.
Solution three: Clean the paper pick roller:
Step 1: Gather the following materials:
- Distilled, filtered, or bottled water (tap water might damage the product)
- A clean, lint-free cotton swab
Step 2: Clean the Roller:
1. Press the Power button () to turn off the product
2. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
3. Remove the rear access door. Press the handle to the right, and then pull out the door to remove it.
4. Locate the paper pick roller.
5. Lightly dampen a cotton swab moistened with bottled or distilled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the swab.
6. Press the swab against the paper pick roller, and then rotate the roller upward with your fingers. Apply a moderate amount of pressure to remove any dust or dirt buildup.
7. Allow the rollers to dry for 10 to 15 minutes.
8. Reattach the rear access door. Carefully insert the right side of the door into the rear of the product, and then push the door forward until it snaps into place.
9. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
10. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
Try printing again.

Please let me know if checking the paper and cleaning the paper pick roller resolved your error state. Best of luck!

Hello @miamiparis,
Thanks for getting back to me regarding this issue. I'm sorry to hear that checking the paper and cleaning the rollers failed to resolve your issue.
Way back on November 10th, 2014 when I had you print the Printer Test Report, and it failed to print I asked if there were any blinking light patterns that you noticed on your printer.
If you aren't sure, can I please have you print the Printer Test Report again:
- Make sure that plain white paper is loaded in the input tray.
- Press and hold the Power button (
).
- While holding the Power button, press the Resume button (
) four times.
- Release the Power button (
). The self-test report prints.
If the report fails to print again, do you see any blinking or solid lights on your printer?
Is so, can you please let me know what blinking or solid lights you see. Once I get this information from you I will be able to offer further instruction. I look forward to hearing from you! 🙂

Hello @miamiparis,
At this point this is sounding more and more like a hardware failure with your printer. Especially since is fails to function standalone for us and you see no blinking lights at all on your printer.
The last step I would suggest trying is to ensure that your printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet for power. Power strips and surge protectors can cause printers to lack power. To verify that this error state is not being caused by some sort of power issue just plug it direct to a wall outlet and test standalone printing again.
Should the print still fail, I recommend that you contact our Technical Support queue by phone to explore additional support options.
HP Technical Support can be reached at: 800-474-6836.

Thanks again for reaching out to the HP Support Forums. It's been a pleasure working with you. I wish you luck from here! 🙂
