I have not been successful with my HP 722 printer despite application of the patch. My OS is Vista 64 bit and I suspect the problem is with the cable. I'm not sure about the compatibility of available cables with Vista 64 bit. Many have named cable brands which were satisfactory but usually they only describe the OS as Vista. Likewise the cable details only list Vista without specifically listing Vista 64 bit. Can anyone help here?

I have this same issue, using Win7 64bit, and the HP LaserJet 1020.
I copied the dll files but the spool keeps dying. It ONLY happens when the deskjet is plugged in... If i unplug the deskjet, the spooler stays on. I've tried to remove the drive,r and kill the printer then reinstall but the spooler keeps dying after its all setup again.

ok I resolved my issue, I found this:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Troubleshoot-printer-problems
and ran it twice, first time it just enabled the spooler, (that is not fixing it) the second time it noticed the printer was causing an issue then it issolated the printer from the spooler, and this has allowed the print spooler to now stay active...!

My HP722C printer is connected to my laptop (OS Vista 64 bit) with a USB to Parallel cable and is finally operational. Although I had applied the patch I had not been successful until I replaced the cable. Now using a Sabrent printer cable compatible with Vista 64 bit. Obtained cable from TigerDirect, part M501-1058.

Thanks for confirming a cable that works in Vista x64. I have also heard some Belkin and Sweex cables work. Many models do not seem to work - for others make sure you select a cable that works with your operating system (64 bits and Vista or Windows 7 as appropriate).

I also would like to connect my parallel port HP710C printer to my new Windows 7 (64 bit) computer via a USB to Parallel Port Adapter. I see on this site that this will work with a downloaded patch. However, when I search on-line for USB to Parallel Port Adapters I see that most aren't specified to work with Windows 7 (32 bit or 64 bit). Can people who have this working tell me what adapter, company and product number, that they are using? In the couple of instances where a specific manufacturer was mentioned in these postings, I could not find a product from that manufacturer that specificed it would work with Windows 7. Most go up to Vista, some up to XP. Some are totally silent about what operating system they support.
Thanks

I am having precisely the same behavior as LynneR: using a Monoprice parallel to usb cable with my DeskJet 710C, I get only partial prints, and the printer doesn't spit the page out when it stops. Before the patch, I got nothing. Any update on this?
Using Windows 7 Home x64.

There are a large number of USB-parallel cables. Some work, some do not in Windows 7. Check the manufacturers website and make sure your converter is supported in Windows 7 x64. The posts here have models folks here have found to work in Windows 7.
One thing that might help: go to the Devices and Printers folder, right click on the Deskjet 710c, select Printer Properties, Ports and uncheck the box for "Enable bidirectional support" near the bottom of the page.
