I definitely appreciate the help. it's a very strange issue.

No microtrend or other scanning software on the PC. All the other PCs are attached to the exact same equipment, an older HP Color Laserjet 3500, which amusingly enough works great.

I am more than happy to help.  I am currently working on what is keeping this installation from connecting. I literally stumbled upon this document regarding AVG keeping a network printer from installing. It's extensive and really quite informative.

--Configuration AVG--

I have never offered this a suggestion before but this sounds like what is going on with your connection problems.  Let me know if this helps you any. I'm anxious to read the results.

I actually disabled AVG before the install as I initially wondered if that was part of the issue.

That's what I thought.  I wasn't sure if all that typing in the document could have been summed up in one sentence or not.  This is my next suggestion: I have this exact printer on my computer.  When I click on the start button and type %temp% in the search bar I found the Photosmart software in a 7z folder titled 7zS49E1 (yours may be different).  Then right-click over the P5510x64.msi file and click repair.

Do that, then go to All Programs>>HP>>Photosmart 5510>>Printer Setup and Software and try the installation of a network printer again to see if the icon on the desktop opens up the HP Printer Assistant with all the functions you need.  If this does not work, you may have to do a full scrub of the software (complete uninstall within the registry) and try again.  I will post those steps if this doesn't work. I am trying to stick to simple solutions at the moment so I hope this works!

Ok will give it a shot when I get a chance. I have already done a full scrub and reinstall, so if this doesn't work I think I'll just have to live with the limited functionality.

I hope this works then. But if it doesn't, what functions are you missing exactly?

Well as I mentioned, the HP 'interface' is non-functional, so no ink levels, etc.,  nor can I scan to this PC. I can print to it, and that's about it.

You will enjoy using the printer's embedded web server (by typing the IP address into a web browser) which will give you ink levels and scanning (web scan is very simple, you just right-click on the image to save it on your computer) as long as it is setup on the wireless network with a valid IP address.

In your devices and printers folder, do you see multiple copies of this printer?

Does the icon look like a black printer or a gray generic scanner-looking icon?

If you right-click and go into printer properties and then the ports tab, which port is the printer on?

I understand if you get exhausted working on this and don't want to troubleshoot any more, but if I get a response in my other thread(s) that fixes this, I will gladly pass that fix on for you to try.  Or answer the questions above for me and maybe it is something simple still.

I have no option in windows 8 to recieve e mails from HP

Hello bertha99!

I will do my best to help you but I am not certain I understand the problem.  What kind of emails do you want to receive from HP?

Is this related to the HP Photosmart 5510?

What is the domain name of your email account (gmail, hotmail, etc)?

Here is what I think the issue is:  you have installed the printer software but something is different.  Would you like to register your printer?
