I just purchased the duplexing unit for my OfficejetPro L7580 from HP.  The printer has an ethernet connection to the computer.  The HP utility sees that the duplexing unit is installed, but the duplexing option in the print dialog box is still greyed out.

My Mac operating system is:  OS X 10.8.4 (12E55).

The printer firmwareis: R0040xxNxcN0

All help appreciated.  Thanks.

First, are you using the most recent drivers? I would recommend uninstalling the ones you are using and installing them from the website linked below directly. Additionally, through the printer preferences and properties have you made sure that duplexing is enabled on the unit? Some had the feature turned off by default.

Let me know!

Thanks, Spencer.  The problem was in the printer preferences.  THe duplexer is apparently an additional driver that I needed to enable.  It's working now.

I cannot get duplex printing to work for love or money.  And I NEED it.  Can you please advise how to enable?  Have downloaded latest driver.  Duplex printing option is greyed out.  Have been everywhere but cannot turn it on.  Can print duplex from my windows laptop, no problem.
