LaserJet CP5525
Microsoft Windows Server 2008

I've been dealing with an Embedded JetDirect Error on a CP5525 for a little over a week now. The errors occurs after spooling the first job. It will print the first job (any size, any application) fine, both from through our printer server setup or via Direct-to-IP pirnting. After spooling the first job the printer will essentially become "hung-up" negoaiting the next print job before erroring out to the 81.04 embedded jetdirect error. Here are the troubleshooting steps I've attempted:

1. Swapped out internalJetDiret card with an EIO JetDirect card - no change

2. Updated firware for the CP5525 to the latest firmware.

3. Updated UPD print drivers to PCL6 (v6.0.0) on our print server - this  resolved the issue for about four days before it came back

Anyone have any recomendations on what to try next?

Sadly I have been experiencing the same type of errors we have about 20 CP5525's and about 4 of them just starting having these Jetdirect 81.04 errors our first thought was formatter board since the NIC is integrated. This did not work, but then we noticed that the units that were still working had the solid state drives while the ones that did not work had the encrypted hard drives. We swapped between them and the problem seemed to follow the Encrypted hard drives.  so we updated the firmware but this did not help. So atm we are getting a few replacement drives to hopefully fix this issue (either the firmware was corrupted or the drive was starting to fail the preboot menu does not detect any issues though). Anyone with any more ideas would be great. I am sure there is a better way of fixing this.

If you think the firmware is corrupted you can do a partial clean which will force the firmware to be reloaded from the backup copy. This will also get rid of any data you have on the drive, so be sure to do a backup before you do the partial clean.

Sometimes on a future smart device you have to do a full clean or a format which wipes out all the firmware and then you must reload from it from USB Drive.

Well it is truly an interesting issue this 81.04 2 out of the 4 units we been working on, two seem to be fixed by replacing the formatter board and drive. I am starting to wonder if the formatter board was in fact the issue and the drive was holding onto the error state. That would probably mean that SHThompson is correct all I should have needed to do was a partial clean. But the issue with the other two units is what concerns me I wonder if we got some faulty refurbished formatter boards in the mix while trying to repair these units. I will keep you up to date with my struggle and I will be listening for any more clever ideas as well.

I just checked the service manual and the 81.04 is not listed, how does the error show up in the event log?

Isn't that interesting, we noticed it not being in the Service Manual as well. The error occurs after one print from the network, it will completely print and saying the print is processing from tray 2 then 81.04.00 pops up.  The printer is able to print internal prints just fine. We are currently testing a known good formatter board in the unit, so far is it working perfectly. We have noticed that the known good formatter is an older firmware version (20111217). We have been installing the newest firmware when troubleshooting and installing the replacement boards. We do not have the older firmware to test this thought. Does HP still have that FTP site where it archives the older firmware and can these printers have the firmware rolled back?

HP still has an FTP site but I don't know if you'll find the printer firmware there or not.

I believe that is a future smart device where you can do a full clean and reinstall the firmware from scratch so if you can find an older version you can put it on.

When installing Firmware from USB Drive you should pick an old small slow drive if available.

Also put copies on two different USB drives from different manufacturers.

Somebody I was helping recently said they put copies on three different drives and one worked. They didn't go into detail so I don't think the first one worked.

Located all the firmware versions on the HP site and slowly went forward from a known working firmware that did not display the 81.04 error. The latest firmware that seems to not give me the 81.04 error is 2302963_436070.

So for future trouble shooting of this error I would.

  1. Perform a partial clean (any unsaved data will be lost)
  2. Upgrade the firmware to the newest firmware. (Hoping this issue will be resolved)
  3. Downgrade the firmware to the version 2302963_436070. (if this does not work upgrade back to the newest version always best to use the most current firmware).
  4. Formatter board replacement.

Just my thoughts after going through this error with 4 of these units that we have. All working again.

My main resolution has been to install an EIO JetDirect card to bypass the built in embedded jetdirect on the formatter board. Only has worked on one so far. Do you have a link to the older firmware (2302963_436070) I am unable to find it on the ftp.hp.com site.
