Envy 5660 e-all-in-One series
Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)

Printer works fine ,except for the problem I have getting the photo paper to feed from the photo tray. If I put the photo paper down in the regular paper tray and adjust the size to the photo paper it prints great pictures ,just can't get it to feed from the proper tray.

Hey @TOMWW,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

I understand that you're not able to print photos from the photo tray on your HP ENVY 5660 e-All-in-One Printer. I would like to assist you today with resolving this photo printing issue. This issue may be due to a paper tray issue within your actual HP Envy or a setting conflict on your computer. To isolate the issue and resolve this paper feeding issue can I please have you follow the steps below.

Step 1: Check Paper:

Tips for Avoiding Paper Feed Issues:

  • Replace any ripped, curled, wrinkled, or bent paper.
  • Avoid printing on paper that is dusty. Reload paper that has been in the photo tray for a time.
  • Make sure that all the paper in the stack is the same size and type. The printer can only process one type of paper at a time.
  • For the photo tray: No fewer than 5 sheets of photo paper loaded at one time. Make sure that the stack of photo paper is not higher than the top edges of the paper width guides.
  • For the input tray: No fewer than 10 sheets and no more than 25 sheets of paper

Load Paper:

1. Grasp the handle on the input tray, and then pull the tray toward you to open it.

2. Put one or two fingers in the slot on the photo tray, and then pull the tray toward you to open it as far as possible.

3. If you do not see the photo tray inside the input tray, remove the output tray, and then pull open the photo tray.

4. Insert the photo paper with the print side or shiny side of the paper down into the photo tray.

5. Push the photo tray into the printer as far as possible.

6. Replace the output tray on the input tray, if you removed it, and then push the input tray into the printer until it locks into place.

7. On the Have You Changed the Paper? screen that displays, check to make sure that the photo paper is correctly loaded into the photo tray.

Step 2: Alter Driver Settings:

  1. Open the picture you want to print on your computer
  2. Click on File and Print
  3. Under the Print dialogue window click on Properties (or Preferences). The option depends on the program that you're using.
  4. Under the Properties window click on the Paper/Quality tab
  5. From the Paper Size dropdown ensure that the paper size selection matches the paper size loaded in your photo tray
  6. From the Media drop-down list choose the Paper Type (glossy or matte).
  7. Choose the Paper Source as Photo Tray
  8. Click OK
  9. Lastly, select OK or Print

Please let me know if the steps I've provided resolve your photo tray printing issue. I look forward to hearing from you! 🙂

did you ever get the printer to pick up the photo paper? I am having the same issue and nothing is working. when printing from the paper try its great.  just don't see the point of the photo tray if it doesn't work.

I contacted HP support today as printer was just purchased in the last week.  The app I was using was not compatible with the printer.  Once I changed to Windows Photo Viewer I was able to print using the photo tray on the printer.  Hope this resolves your issues.

I read all the HP "answers" for this problem, which I found very basic and similar in atiitude as "did you check if the printer was turned on" or other beginner's instructions.

Let's get serious, HP : yes, the paper is right; yes, all sheets are from the same box; yes, the paper is clean, the tray is pushed in, the printer is turned on, the cartridges are new and the windows to the office are closed...

Now, would you care to tell me what to do for a problem which seems to be quite common to this printer's model : the Envy 5640 DOES NOT manage to feed photo paper from the photo tray, while there is absolutely no problem feeding regular paper in A4 size or, even better, photo paper in 4" x 6" (10 cm. x 15 cm.) size from the input tray. It tries three times from the photo tray then stops and puts out the "Out of paper" message.

I've tried one sheet, 5 sheets, 8 sheets or a full tray. Nothing doing, except once in a blue moon, after shuffling the sheets, turning them by 180° and trying all kinds of other "hit-any-key-and-see-what-happens" method it will print ONE photo. One, not two and not again... Which leads me to believe that it's a mechanical/hardware problem.

OK, HP. Ball is in your camp, before I go buy a Canon Pixma or Epson SureColor and put the HP 5640 out in the garbage bin for some other idiot like me to take it home. (I've got an HP Color Laser printer and an all-in-one HP printer as well which work perfectly - old models but they don't make them as they did...)

No responses in the forum resolved my issue.  I contacted support as it was a new printer, under warrranty and was on the verge of returning the product.  I was trying to use the HP Photosmart app to print  4x6 and it wasn't working.   All other sizes worked.   Support had me change the default app to "Windows Photo Viewer".  These are the steps I followed.

1.  Right click to select photo & bring up a menu

2.  Select open with

3.  Choose "Windows Photo Viewer"

I think this will save Windows Photo Viewer as the default app.  Using this app allowed me to print all size photos on the Envy 5660.

Hope this helps.

Have been struggling with this one - having done everything that had been suggested, I just could not get the blasted thing to print on photo paper - either from the main tray or photo paper tray.  Based on one comment about HP having changed the size of the 4 x 6 paper (!) I cut a piece of 5 x 7 paper down to fit the photo paper tray.  It's actually 4 inches wide by 6.6 inches long (!!!) having one piece of paper to fit the bottom of the tray I could then place the normal 4 x 6 paper on the top.  Result - it no longer thought there was no paper in the tray!  Can someone at HP explain why they have made a photo paper tray that does not fit 'normal' 4 x 6 paper???
