I tried all the above "solutions" as well. I'm out of warranty as well and need to copy documents for a research paper. Funny how everything works until you actually need it to work...
HP how about a real fix?!?

Nope, HP has just totally blown this issue, and all of us, off the map, look up and watch the bus roll by..........
All this time and not one serious attempt by HP to help resolve this. I just power off my printer every time I expect to scan. Just sit there for 5 minutes while it whirs and whistles and creaks and powers back up.
Do my scans, then go on with life until the next time I need to scan again.
Too bad that HP support is so bad, and they really don't care, but then hey, it would cost them some of their profit and the executive bonus pool might be reduced..............

I have the same problem with my Officejet 4500 G10g.
I have tried all these fixes including an update and it doesn't work. I just keep getting the error message then it says that there's a paper error. If I apply light pressure it says starting print and stays there.

Is this actually an HP support forum? ...because I've never come across a product support forum where the manufacturer never responds to support issues!!! Unbelievable.
The following sledgehammer solved the problem for me:
Setup > Tools > Restore Factory Defaults....
