I installed a new cartridge about three weeks ago.  I worked fine.  Now I get the message on my printer to replace black cartridge.

Ok guys, someone tell me how to disconnect this stupid HP Protected Cartridge error.  I've already done the IP address thing and still it will not go away.  I bought remanufactured cartridges on Ebay, and they will not work.  I want to disconnect the whole darn protection system.  HOw?

I think we both know that is not going to help.  Cant we send each other a private message with the solution?

Did all that. Even switch the printer off and then back on. Same message remains "HP protected cartridge installed"

The previous posts were 2 years old. I just discovered this problem. Evidently HP is so hard up for money that they are now embedding their ink cartridges with a program so they can only be used in the printer the new cartridge was originally used in.

Shame on them. So now people will just be tossing these into landfill instead of recycling them to be reused?

If this is the case, as loyal an HP as I've been, I will ditch their printer and never again buy an HP product.

This may remove the protection from future cartridges but how do you remove it from the current cartridge?????

You can not.  Once protections is set, it is set forever on that cartridge.
