Hi Martsharry- I have been away for a while and see that no one else has provided any possible avenues to help you with this.  Here are a couple links that might be of assistance. Also, you said that you the printer around Christmas of last year.  Have you gone to HP.com support and lookup your warranty status?  Easily done.  All you need is your Serial Number.

Yes - My boss used to work for HP and he researched the problem for me. He found out that the gear required  a little 3 in 1 oil. Very simple solution - he actually found the solution online. This is a common problem with the hp 8500. good Luck - hope it works for you. You will need to let the oil soak in for a few minutes - may need to do a second application (we did on mine) but it did the trick!.

Thanks. That worked!

I tried EVERYTHING anyone suggested but STILL get the error!  ALSO even when I turn it off with then power button, everytime I turn it back on it tells me I turned oit off improperly and need to use the power button next time.

Maybe these problems are related????  HELP!

I forgot to ask.... WHERE is the gear to oil?

Only had my printer for two days printed a few docs now it keeps telling me there is a paper jam when there isn't. Trying to print boarding passes for flight for daughter and getting very frustrated. If one more site tells me to remove the paper I will scream. This printer will be making a journey back to the Apple shop as it is not fit for purpose and I will be advising anyone who will listen not to buy HP products. I certainly won't be wasting my money on this cheaply structured product which cannot  do the very task that is was brought to do. Well at least I feel better for having a rant. It is now gone midnight  and no boarding pass thank you Hewitt Packard for absolutely nothing

Sorry I haven't checked in for a very long time - hate this printer - jam warning will come back. The gear below the bar the printheads slide on on the left. Open the cover and oil the entire thing (make sure you put a paper towel to  catch anything that might drip down). Let it soak and and hopefully that will do the trick. For some reason this is not "spinging" back the way it is supposed to after each use therefore it gives a false paper jam signal.

The fix will work for a while but be careful not to pull paper out of the feed - it will start the whole stinking thing all over again! I noted this when it started feeding through too many pages and pulled out the paper so it couldn't take anymore and lo and behold another paper jam signal that forced me to go through this whole process again! I will never buy HP again.

I agree - HP used to have quality products. My last printer was great so I decided to buy another HP only with more functions - big mistake! I spent over two thousand dollars between my new computer and printer (both HP) and within 1 year both were junk! Had to put a new motherboard in the computer and nothing but issues with the printer. I called HP and because I didn't spend extra $ for their extended waranty they didn't want to do anything but for $300 they would have been happy to send me a new motherboard! My son replaced it for me for half that. HP is no longer the company they used to be - time to move on - maybe a dell this time lol!

Your trick did not work. My printer will not take in paper without jamming and I do not see any pieces left in it. I have been on the computer all night trying to find a repair facility to no avail. Advice?
