Hello @morley46,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

I understand that you're receiving the message 'print filter pipeline host error' when trying to print a Facebook message from your WIndows XP computer to your HP Deskjet 2540 All-in-One Printer. I would like to assist you today with resolving this issue. Now, I did some research into this error and it does appear to be caused by one of two things:

  • 1) Print Spooler Issue. The Print Spooler is the print system built into your Windows Operating System. It controls all jobs for printing no matter the make or model of your printer. If the Print Spooler is not functioning properly than the print system built into your computer is corrupt.
  • 2) Driver Conflict. Normally, if you're able to print from all programs but one, you usually wouldn't have a driver corruption. Generally any printing errors from 1 specific program would be caused by that program itself. However, there is always a chance that a Plug and Play generic Windows driver for your printer is taking over.

With that being said, perhaps we have a slight driver conflict that is causing the Print Spooler to crash and is resulting in the 'print filter pipeline host' error. Can I have you try the troubleshooting steps below to resolve this issue.

Step 1: Uninstall Drivers:

  1. Click on your Start menu
  2. Select All Programs (or Programs)
  3. Select the HP folder
  4. Select your HP Deskjet
  5. Select Uninstall

Follow any onscreen prompts to complete the uninstall process. Once the uninstall is complete please proceed to the next step.

Step 2: Run CCleaner:

To ensure that there is no malicious files on your computer that could be contributing to this error, and to check the computer Registry for any conflicts, I am going to have you download and run a CCleaner on your computer.

Please click here to download the CCleaner. Once the website opens select the Free Download button at the top. Follow any onscreen prompts to allow the Tool to download. Once the Tool has downloaded, please perform the scan.

Please continue on to the next step.

Step 3: Check Print Spooler:

  1. Click on your Start menu
  2. Select the Run box
  3. In the Run box type services.msc and select OK
  4. When the Services window opens scroll down until you see Print Spooler. Click on Print Spooler once just to highlight it.
  5. In the top left hand corner select Stop. Minimize the Services window but do not close it as I will need you to come back to it.
  6. Next, click on your Start menu
  7. Select My Computer
  8. Select the C Drive
  9. Select Windows
  10. Select System32
  11. Select Spool
  12. Select PRINTERS. If you get an Administrator pop up, just allow this window to 'continue'.
  13. This PRINTERS folder should be empty. If there are any files in this folder, right click and 'delete' them. These files are corrupt print jobs.
  14. Once the files are deleted, close this folder.
  15. Reopen the Services window. Click Start in the top left hand corner to Start your Print Spooler service.

Once your Print Spooler is started, please continue to the next step.

Step 4: Reinstall Drivers:

  1. Please click here to download the Full Feature Software and Driver package for your printer
  2. Once the website opens select the Download button on the top left
  3. Allow the Download to Run if prompted
  4. Once the download is complete, follow the on screen instructions to reinstall your printer
  5. If using a USB Cable connection, do not plug in the USB Cable until the installer prompts you to

Once the installation is complete, please test printing your Facebook message again.

Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. Good luck! 🙂

Thanks for the information, would be the clearest and most concise( for me that means easy to follow!)set of instructions.

Prior to carrying out the procedure i printed off your instructions so at that stage knew the printer was working on that application.

Wasn't very impressed with the CCleaner, as with previous dealings the application waits until all the issues have been checked and problems found(in this case 995 issues)then fixes 15 and if you want the rest fixed you have to buy the program. I hope you are not on a commission basis with this company as you didn't make anything out of me!

Unfortunately after completing all the instructions(without a hitch)and going into Facebook and trying to print the article....no luck! After a long delay the Print Filter Pipeline Host error message came up and printing job didn't complete.

Thanks very much for the time and effort in supplying the information but looks like i may have to change computors and go to an upgraded system.

Cheers

Mike

I followed these direstions as I was having the same issue with the print filter pipeline host stopped working error message when trying to print and when I try to reinstall the driver I get the following error message below. I have tried to run Microsoft fixit and it did not help. Now I cannot use my printer at all. I have Windows Vista Basic and an Envy 7645. I have tried to download the drivers from the HP website and the disc that came with my       printer.                                               photoa.JPG

Hey @jbholen,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

I understand that when attempting to reinstall your HP ENVY 7645 e-All-in-One Printer on your Windows Vista computer after troubleshooting a Print Filter Pipeline Host Error, you're now getting the Installation Error Call to DriverPackageInstall error 5 for lack of Administrator privileges. I would like to assist you today with resolving this issue.  At this time I am going to run you through some troubleshooting steps to unlock the hidden System Administrator Account on the computer to reinstall your device. Can I please have you follow the steps below.

NOTE: Before following the steps below, if you were not logged into your computer as the Administrator when you recieved the Installation Error Call to DriverPackageInstall error please log in as the Adminstrator and attempt the installation of your printer again. If you are logged in as the Administrator on the computer and still get the Installation Error Call to DriverPackageInstall error please proceed with the steps below.

Step 1: Remove Driver:

Even though the installation is failing on your computer there is a chance that a portion of the software and driver package for your HP Envy made its way onto your computer. For troubleshooting purposes it is crucial that we have a nice clean slate to work with. Therefore, I am going to have you ensure that every trace of your printer has been removed from your Windows Vista computer before performing the fix.

  1. Click on your Start menu
  2. Select All Programs
  3. Select the HP folder
  4. Select the HP Envy
  5. Select Uninstall. Please follow any onscreen prompts to complete the uninstall.
  6. Next, click on your Start menu
  7. Select Devices and Printers (or select Control Panel, then Printers)
  8. In the Printers  window look for your HP Envy. If you see it listed please right click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'.
  9. Next, click on any device listed under 'Printers and Faxes' once just to highlight it
  10. Click Print Server Properties at the top of the window
  11. Click on the Drivers tab
  12. Look for your HP Envy driver. If you see it click on it and click Remove at the bottom
  13. Click Remove Driver Only
  14. Select OK
  15. Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties window
  16. Close Devices and Printers. Please proceed to the next step.

Step 2: Unlock Hidden System Administrator Account:

  1. Click on your  Start menu and under the 'search programs and files' box type CMD
  2. CMD will populate as a search option above, just right click on it and 'run as administrator'
  3. Once CMD (Command Prompt) opens, type net user administrator /active:yes and hit enter
    on your keyboard
  4. Next, close CMD and restart your computer
  5. When your computer comes on log into the new Account that should show. It will be called Administrator and will not have a password on it.
  6. If your computer automatically logs into your Account after restart than go to your Start menu click the arrow beside 'shutdown' and choose 'switch user'. Now log into the Administrator Account.
  7. Under the Administrator Account please click here to download the Full Feature Software and Driver package for your printer.
  8. Once the download is complete please follow the onscreen instructions to install your printer
  9. Once the installation is complete please test printing to confirm that your product is functioning as per normal.
  10. If your printer now functions fine please log out of the Administrator Account and back into your normal User Account.
  11. Under your User Account, the printers Full Feature Software and Driver package should show fully installed. Please test printing again to confirm that your product is still functioning as per normal.

If your HP Envy now shows fully installed and functions fine, you will need to hide the System Administrator Account.

Step 3: Hide the System Administrator Account:

  1.  Go to your Start menu and under the 'search programs and files' box type CMD
  2. CMD will populate as a search option above, just right click on it and 'run as administrator'
  3. Once CMD (Command Prompt) opens, type net user administrator /active:no and hit enter
  4. Next, close CMD and restart your computer

When your computer comes back on please test printing again.

Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. I look forward to hearing from you. Good luck! 🙂
