From Lindagg:

I left a message on 7/18 regarding out hp6500 printer and the problem with it not printing black ink.

I tried everything and anything your replies suggested.  I appreciate all your suggestions, including

cleaning the printhead and even leaving it turned off for a few day, When I turn it on it still reads

"Ink System Failure - Please turn off printer".  Not only that, I had recently purchased all new color and

black ink cartridges which I will be out the money for as I am going out to purchase an Epson printer.

I have spent enought time and money on this one (which is not old and hasn't beedt used that much).

One last note, my husband FINALLY got through to HP (in India) and they offered us a

HP 6500 A Plus for 129.99, 2 year warranty, and new ink cartridges.  After researching this model

we are SO GLAD we did NOT take them up on their offer as it got the WORST reviews.

Where is the tool box icon that could be opened to show approximate ink levels? Worked fine before the upgradre to Win 7 64

Please read this post then provide some details.  What printer model? If it is the Officejet 6500 you should be able to see the ink levels on the control panel or see the page here.

I had a similar issue with a photosmart c309a and this worked:

Select "Properties" or "Printer Properties" from the Print window.

Select the "Color" tab.

Change "Color Management" to "Application Managed Colors".

I spent hours trying everything else from cleaning the printheads, buying new toner, constant realignment, cleaning.  All a waste of time and money when all that was needed was changing an option!

my symptons were that black text was not printing at all in most cases or sometimes in very, very light gray if the black text was bolded.

I have an HP Photosmart B010a All in One printer, and had the same problem as most here: colours printed, black ink didn't. I was just about to try soaking and cleaning the printhead, as Bob suggests at the beginning of the thread, when I came across this post. I tried what you suggest here, and black prints again! Presto!

Thanks so much!

My 6500 E709a has worked fine since new in 2010. It gets low level use but regular. I went back to HP in spite of the noise because my last HP was so reliable.

This one suddenly stopped printing black.

Like so many others with the identical problem, my ink level also showed 2/3rd full. A shake says it is almost empty. I replaced with genuine HP ink cartridge as always (I keep the holograph panels each time). Still nothing. I upgraded from v12.0.0 (for Windows) by downloading freshly version 14.0.0. It still fails to work. ( I have carefully folowed all advice regarding the screen-cleaning etc but these were anyway spotlessly bright....

Because I have ink worth more than the printer, I have bought a brand new one but this will be my last HP. It is clear from several web forums that this is an HP problem that is ongoing and one that HP is not bothered to fix because HP is not bothered about keeping customers any more. I shall keep low-levels of ink and buy another make (not Epsom obviously - also crap - don't even ask!).

With all due respect, I believe belaboring this issue is a waste of all our time.  Unfortunately, every time someone posts it shows up in my email.

For starters, I  think 26 PAGES OF MESSAGES on the same subject is ridiculous.  If you're new here, just start reading from page 1 and you'll either  find your solution or someone to sympathize with you by the time you get to page 26.

 We all agree:

  • HP consistently produces inferior products
  • HP does not support their products
  • Purchasing HP products gives them a good market share of the computer and printer business
  • Individually or as a forum we are not going to change the way HP does business unless we stop buying their products (heck, the printers are about $200, so dump it if you can't fix it - and the ink cartridges run out like toilet paper)
  • Oh yeah and this is an "HP Forum" that apparently no one from HP is monitoring

  • Now, if you can't afford to throw your HP stuff out, by far THE best post on fixing your printer was the one posted by Bob_Headrick in 2008:

Solved! Go to Solution.

Now, can we stop griping about this problem and doing something proactive about it?

The likely cause for out of ink at 2/3 full is a blocked vent.  See my post here.

Please do not presume to speak for "all".

It does appear that many folks post in a thread without reading any of it, even when a solution is marked.
