I have a deskjet 5650.  After reading all the above suggestions. I soaked the cartridge etc., couldn't locate printhead, but where I could ink I cleaned (best I could reach) with a cotton and alcohol.  Still no black.  Next solution please.

The printhead on the Deskjet 5650 in included in the print cartridge, it is the platinum colored rectangle on the bottom of the cartridge. For this printer I would suggest you follow the troubleshooting steps here.

I am having the same problem with a 4550J. Bought this for my son a couple of years ago for college and it became unusable with black ink.  Did the QTIp cleanse, no progress. Any hope before I throw it into the recycle heap? OS is Vista, and we've spent close to $100 trying new cartridges to no avail. Cartridged are all HP.

Hi, I have a Photosmart C6180 with XP op sys.  I too have the dark blue cartridge I replaced and it still shows it is empty.  I have an error report saying to replace the cart. or it cannot print.  Can you help me too ???? Please !!   Thanks, Tom

I have an OfficeJet J4580, and just bought a high-yield refill black cartridge from Cartridge World (read through the download and it didn't mention my problem).  Went to print a 4-page black and white document full of legalese (i.e., small print) and on page 3 the black ink gradually turned to green, and all of page 4 was in green.

Went to re-print pages 3 and 4, and it did the same thing 3/4 of the way through page 4 (which in this case was the second of the 2 pages being printed).

I seem to recall cleaning the print heads uses up a lot of ink so I thought I'd check the forum first in case that is not generally believed to be helpful.

Hope I luck out and you (or someone else) have seen this before as well!!

Many thanks.

Hi, Ive been through this thread & not seen a similar problem to mine.

HP Photosmart C4600

Black does not seem to work when i try to print Photographs,

If i print a document (text) it seems fine.

When printing pictures however it seems to use the red/cerise ink in the image where it should be black :Surprise:

If I remove the colour cartridge it will print Black - on what the display says is 'Back-up ink mode' ?

(having used a lot of coloured ink testing &)

- I've not altered any settings

Checked the print options & Ink levels, cleaned, Re-installed Software...

No change

I've been very pleased with the units operation, but any advice or suggestions would be very much appreciated please

Thanks,

My blck ink is not out, the panel shows that it's about 2/3 full. But it won't print anything black. I turned the printer off and back on, and I remmoved the ink cartridge and put it back in. I don't know what else to do.

Perfecto!! The hot water method worked.
