HP Photosmart 7520
macOS 10.12 Sierra

After posting a question on how to get back to a situation where my HP 7520 all-in would once again print, as it did until a few months ago, images from the net - such as a map or an airline boarding pass that came with ads - as a black-and-white draft, as per the setting, instead of weird colours, I received advice from two HP support agents. Chimney93 advised first that I reset the printer download the latest version from www.hp.com/drivers and install it. This made no difference. Then Chimney93 advised that I download the set of printer drivers from the Apple site (which is HP Printer Drivers v5.0 for OS X) and go through the re-set and re-install. When this didn’t help either, DVortex rounded out the advice on re-setting and re-installing with some further details. When none of that worked, I finally upgraded my OS from El Capitan to Sierra, in the hope that this might help.

It didn’t, andthings have got only worse. Today when trying to do a scan on the machine I find that whereas this used to work just fine, now it doesn’t. My desktop is fully in WiFi contact with the printer - I can print through WiFi all right - but when I call up HP Scanner, and click on Scan, the blue-grey striped bar starts rolling on the left side of the scanner window, but nothing else happens. The scanner function seems dead.

I don’t know if this is because the driver from the Apple site I downloaded and installed on the two HP support agents’ advice won’t work the scanner of my HP 7520, or if my subsequently upgrading from El Capitan to Sierra is what destroyed the scanner function.

Either way I’d be grateful for advice on what I can do so I can use the 7520 to scan again, even if I’ve given up on trying to solve the  printing problem I’ve described.

Hello@Hewpal,

Thanks for using the HP Forums. One Stop for all sort of solutions for your HP Products.

I have read your post and understand that you need assistance in fixing scanning issue on the printer. Is that, right? I will be glad to help you.

I understand that you were assisted by 2 HP Support agents and the issue could not be fixed.

I request you to perform the steps below and check if that solves the issue.

Firstly, I recommend you to reset the printing system using the steps from the link below.

Reset printing system: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01371980

Then use the link below and download the latest driver for the Mac Sierra operating system and install the driver and restart the PC 2 to 3 times before using the printer functionalities.

This should solve the issue.  Let me know for more solution.

Hello Resolv_S

Thanks for responding to my question.

After posting it last night, I found on the Forum an exchange relating to somebody else's problem with his 7520 after upgrading to macOSSierra at

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Inkjet-Printing/iMac-Sierra-will-not-print-with-my-Photosmart-7520-wit...

in whch DVrotex advises uninstalling all previous printer drivers before resetting the printer and then downloading and installing the same driver as you suggest etc. Should I do such an uninstall first?

Hey@Hewpal,

Thanks for the response.

Resetting the printing system is uninstalling the previous printers.

That’s the same step @Dvortex has suggested.

Hope this helps. Feel free to reply for more.

Hi Resolv_S

I’ve implemented your advice, combined with some from DVortex, and after a good half hour of work have ended up no better off, and a little worse.

First, after re-setting I found that a whole number of HP lines showed in Applications:

Screen Shot 2017-02-01 at 12.15.48 2.png

So I went through the uninstall process:

Screen Shot 2017-02-01 at 12.20.56 2.png

and also trashed the HP folder in Go>/Library/Printers.

I then downloaded and installed HP-Inkjet-SW-OSX-Mavericks_v12.34.44. The set-up process found my 7520 already set up.

I then tried to print a map, with the settings on black and white draft:

What I got was a map in colours, the same as when I started all this, and weird colours at that.

I then opened Applications and dragged the icon for the only HP scanner I could find into the Dock, and clicked to open the scanner. I got this:

I did find that I could get to the scanner through System Preferences>Printers&Scanners>Scan>Open scanner. But apart from all that being much more awkward than simply clicking on an icon in the Dock, what it brought me was this, with none of the options of manipulating the scanned image that I had on the version before I started:

I got an email yesterday from HP saying I’d been awarded a Discussion Driver badge on HP Support Forum. A fat lot of use that is to me! What I deserve is a brand new high perf HP printer for all the work I’ve put in on my issue, which then became two issues, and to no good purpose in the end.

Hi Resolv_S

It gets still worse.

Having tried to scan a four page document I see that whereas the previous scanner software would have kept the scanned pages as a multipage scanned document, this one produces them as separate pages; also, even though I have it set on Desktop as the destination, it resolutely puts them into my Pictures.

Was this software deliberately designed to drive the user crazy?

Hey@Hewpal,

Thanks for the response.

I have found a suitable article which will help you do multiple scans in to one document and as preferred format like word file or PDF or jpeg image.

Hi Resolv_S

Thanks for your advice.

Having downloaded and installed HP Easy Scan, and I’m back with the scanning functions I’ve always had on my 7520.

That, however, is where the good news ends.

Before installing HP Easy Scan I once again went through re-setting the printer, getting rid of all HP folders, re-installing HP-Inkjet-SW-OSX-Mavericks_v12.34.44, re-starting my iMac three times and then adding the printer, making sure I chose it rather than leave the setting on Air-Print - all as per the combined advice I’d had from you and DVortex.

I then tried printing a map with the setting on Plain paper, Fast draft, black and white.

Screen Shot 2017-02-03 at 10.18.19 2.png

The machine worked at the normal deliberate printing speed, instead of fast draft, and instead of the black and white print specified, produced a page with a map on which all the main roads, shown in various colours on the original, were in a vague yellow; the railway lines and the map-grid show in black but the black outlines of the roads and streets were all missing; and the orange arrow of the original showing my destination was totally invisible. In other words, instead of the black and useful white map the machine used to produce, without wasting any of the coloured ink, I got a map that used up some of the yellow and was totally useless for the purpose.

Subsequently I had to print out a cinema ticket I had received as a PDF, embedded in a page with ads showing all kinds of colours.

Screen Shot 2017-02-04 at 23.52.59 2.png

Though I specified Print in grayscale, instead of giving me a black and white copy, the machine printed the page in FULL COLOUR.

Two days later I had to print out a form I had downloaded as a PDF which, with a logo in deep blue at the top, had black text between narrow panels filled with a lighter blue.

Screen Shot 2017-02-06 at 12.05.58 3.png

This time, although I specified Print in grayscale, I got a page on which all the areas in blue in the original came out in PINK, and all the text in black in the original, came out ORANGE.

I ask you, DVortex and the CEO of Hewlett-Packard to imagine how you’d feel if you were in my shoes.

Hi Resolv-S

Thanks for the advice. Given the cost likely of a repair, I’ll have to think over the option you suggest.

Meanwhile, however, I’ve discovered that, in contrast to HP Scan, which sent a multipage scanned document to a folder as one document,  HP Easy Scan will send it as a series of single pages - which is much more annoying from then on to handle - in every format offered except PDF.

Is there a remedy for this?
