Hey,

Thanks for your reply, JoeTwoPointOh.  The feature you are describing is no longer available in the current model HP printers.  The workaround solution I provided above is the best option I have found for performing the desired function you are looking for.

I hope this helps,

Jason

Put the photo on the glass, select "Copy" or "Photo" and follow the instructions on the screen. They should be self explanatory. If you're still confused, check your manual.

I'd like to add two solutions to jason_h's:

The first solution I found on another forum thread by Caritana (again give her the kudos for this)using a software called Autosplitter, but I don't know if this is free or not (haven't tried it since I have both GIMP and Photoshop on my computer and they both batch photos)

The third solution is one I'm offering. It isn't free but will save you the most amount of time...because you aren't the one doing the work: send your negatives, photos, slides, polaroids, and so on to a scanning company and have them digitally put it on a DVD for you (there are some companies that can even copy 8 mm films, VHS cassettes and other similar media). The one I was the most impressed with both in price and what they offered is ScanCafe. They have rave reviews and a decent price--$0.29-0.22 per photo (I've read it can be as cheap as $0.19 if you sign up for their emailed coupon)--and that price includes  retouching your photo/negatives. There are some other services that will only scan your photos and charge extra to retouch them. (btw I am not a ScanCafe employee, just someone who did her research on several services and was the most impressed with them).

also in case your search engine didn't find it, here is the  GIMP free downloadable software website.

EXACTLY. If I wanted to use an add-on software program, or worse pay to have my photos scanned, I wouldn't have spent the money on THIS printer when my C309 crapped out on me.

HP - PLEASE PUT THIS FEATURE BACK!!

How about an update to the software? The lack of this feature makes using the scanner very user unfriendly and time consuming when scanning multiple photos. Do any of the newer scanners still have that feature. This is actually so important to me that I'm considering returning the unit.

Wow, what a massive step backwards this printer is!!

I have about 1,000s pictures to scan and my justification for buying this printer was the automatic feed and scan quality.

No Auto-Crop feature? Huh? So if I scan a 4x6 picture I can either manually crop every picture before I scan or I scan as a larger document (A4) and then edit each picture afterwards.

So I thought I figured it out, I would scan in the pictures with a 4x6 size in the settings. I adjust the automatic feed to the size of the pictures and this should work correct???? WRONG...

It scans 4x6 from the edge of the glass and not the position of the automatic feed. What is the point guys???

I have continued to buy HP becuase of the quality. The printer is fine, but the settings available in the software make the machine practilly unuseable except for a few one off scans.

Terribly disappointed. If someone can correct me, I will take back everything I just wrote. I hope that I am wrong about this.

@jdspirit, sorry that you are having this problem trying to have your photos saved to different files from the glass.

This particular printer software doesn't allow that to occur. Some older model printers have that particular feature, but this printer does not, sorry.

Do *ANY* Hp scanners have the age old capability to auto-detect image size? Surely HP hasn't lost all of its formerly great features in every new model?
