In a supported Web browser on your computer, type the IP address assigned to the printer. For example: if the printer’s IP address is 123.456.789.123, you would type “http://123.456.789.123” into your Web browser’s Address or Go to field. The printer IP address is listed on the Configuration page.
To find the IP address, press Setup>Network Settings>Print Network Config. Page.

I'm having similar issues listed in this thread. I'm using a Wireless Netgear router - I can connect to the Embedded Web Server from my web client - everything looks fine - test email works BUT when I try to do anything content related from the printer (apps etc) it doesn't work.
Trying to access the Web Server Setup from the printer, when I select "Printer Email Address" I get "The printer was unable to connect to the server" - and offers options to setup a proxy (which I do not use).
My Router Status:
IP Address 24.99.98.148 Subnet Mask 255.255.252.0 Default Gateway 24.99.96.1 DHCP Server 68.87.68.13 DNS Server 68.87.68.166
68.87.74.166
Here is my Network Settings from the web server:
I've tried several variations following threads in support, including 252.0 ending the Subnet Mask, and tried using the DNS settings from my router. Suggestions?
IP Address 192.168.1.3 Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway 192.168.1.1 DNSv4
Configured By Manual Preferred DNS Address 192.168.1.1

I tried all of the other solutions posted here, and none worked for me. Through trial & error, however, the following DID work for gMail:
First go to a command prompt and type IPCONFIG to get your network Subnet & DNS Gateway info, for example:
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 1.1.1.1
Then...
- Open the printer's internal web page by browsing to its IP address (i.e.: 1.1.1.105 in this example)
- Select the green Networking tab
- Select Wireless (802.11) (located on the left hand netowrking pane)
- Select the green IPv4 Configuration tab
- Select Manual IP
- Enter the Manual IP Address YOU have configured for the printer (i.e.: 1.1.1.105)
- Enter 255.255.255.0 for the Manual Subnet Mask (from above)
- Enter 1.1.1.1 for the Manual Default Gateway (from above)
- Enter the Manual IP Address YOU have configured for the printer (i.e.: 1.1.1.105)
- Select Manual DNS Server
- Enter 1.1.1.1 for the Manual Preferred DNS Server <== This was the action missing from other soluutions
- Enter 1.1.1.1 for the Manual Preferred DNS Server <== This was the action missing from other soluutions
- Select Apply
NOW, go to the SETTINGS tab and select "Outgoing E-mail Profile Setup"
Use the following for gMail:
Your eMail address <your.name@gMail.com>
Your Name <Your Preferred Display Name>
SMTP Server : smtp.gmail.com
SMTP Port : 465
CHECK the box for SMTP server requires authentication for outgoing e-mail messages
SMTP User ID : <enter YOUR full gMail address>
SMTP Password : <enter YOUR gMail password>
Click Save & Test
You can use the same parameters for Device Alerts
Hope this works for you!

I am having the same problem connection new HP8500 to server. It downloaded and installed update, but never would connect to eprint server. I am using ethernet through ATT modem/router.
IP: 192.168.1.72
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.254
Source: DHCP
Primary DNS: 192.168.1.254
Is there anything I can do?
Added note: I am using 2wire modem/router brand new from Best Buy.

Since the printer downloaded and insstalled an update it does not seem that internet connectivity would be an issue. There must be some problem with the eprint server it is trying to connect to. After installing the update it never connected to the eprint server to get an email address.

Not sure where you're getting the .254 from, try changing them to .7 to match the last string of your IP. My IP and Defaults match except that the default has one fewer digits.
Sorry, that's all I've got for you it's been a while since I've even thought about this.

The .254 comes from the IP address assigned to the ATT modem/router by the ATT service. I cannot change it.
The .72 is the IP address of the printer that the router/modem assigns to it in the local network.
