Hi oldrelicdvds,

Regardless of the version, as long you able to download the latest FW available in HP.COM it should work as the latest FW will have all improvement on previous version.

Otherwise please go to www.hp.com

1) Go to "SUPPORT" link on the top right --> select "SOFTWARE or DRIVER"

2) key in product name eg 'officejet pro 8710'

3) Look for "FIRMWARE" section --> download the latest firmware & install accordingly

That's what I did, but firmware ends in AR, not BR as per the fix in first post.

Doesn't help anyway, when I run OJ8710_R1716A.exe, it cannot find printer, so must be up to date.

Hi oldrelicdvds,

Sorry for the offline experience that you faced.

The above comment by "archilles23" is valid, and seems that issue is still persist, here are some troubleshooting tips to help with the situation. I recomand that you could follow thru by sequence...

HP Printers - Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection

Step 1: Evaluate a Wireless Network Test Results page

  • Print a Wireless Network Test Results page.

  • Print the page from the Wireless, Network Settings or Setup menu.

  • Evaluate the Wireless Network Test Results page for any problems.

    • If the page does report a problem, follow the steps listed on the page to resolve the issue. If the wireless connection drops, continue troubleshooting.

  • On the Wireless Network Test Results page, locate the Network Name (SSID) under the Current Configuration section, and then compare it to the name of your wireless network.

    • If the network name matches, skip to the next step.

    • If the network name does not match, your printer is on the wrong network. Continue troubleshooting.

  • Reconnect the printer to your wireless network.

  • Select the Setup, Network, or Wireless menu, select Wireless Setup Wizard, and then follow the on-screen instructions to connect the printer to your network.

If the wireless connection drops, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Minimize wireless channel interference

  • Print a Network Configuration Page.

  • Print the page from the Wireless, Network Settings, or Setup menu.

  • Review the Number of 802.11 networks discovered list on the last page, and then locate the channel for your wireless network.

  • Open an Internet browser, type the router IP address in the browser address bar, and then push Enter.

  • Sign in to your router web-based setup page, if necessary.

  • Change your network channel to one not being used by others, and then save your changes. For example, if Channel 1 is used for several other networks, including your main Wi-Fi network, change your Wi-Fi network channel to 6 or 11.

If the wireless connection drops, continue to the next step.

Step 3: Change the wireless network name

  • On your router web-based setup page, locate the menu that allows you to change your wireless network name.

  • Change the name to something more unique, such as Jane's home network, and then save your changes.

  • Reconnect your printer to the wireless network.

  • Select the Setup, Network, or Wireless menu, select Wireless Setup Wizard, and then follow the on-screen instructions to connect the printer to your network.

If the wireless connection drops, continue to the next step.

Step 4: Turn off additional routers

Step 5: Move the router and printer closer together

  • Move the printer and router closer together, but no closer than 1.8 m (6 ft).

  • Remove any metal objects between the printer and the router. Objects such as refrigerators, microwaves, or metal bookcases might interfere with wireless transmission.

  • Reconnect your printer to the wireless network.

If the wireless connection drops, continue to the next step.

Step 6: Evaluate the printer IP address

  • On the Network Configuration Page you printed earlier, locate IPv4 in the 802.11 Wireless section, and then locate the IP Address.

  • Compare the IP Address to the Default Gateway to determine if they are similar. When the first three octets are 255 in the Subnet Mask, the first three octets in the IP Address must be the same as the first three octets in the Default gateway.

Step 7: Update the printer firmware

  • Make sure the printer is on and connected to the computer, either through your local network or a USB cable.

        1. Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then enter your printer model number.

  • Select your operating system if required.

  • Click Firmware, and then click Download.

  • Click Use HP Download and Install Assistant (Recommended), click Next, and then click Install now.

  • When the update completes, click OK.

  • If you connected a USB cable to update your network printer, remove the USB driver installed by Windows.

  • Search Windows for Devices and Printers, and then click Devices and Printers in the list of results.

  • Right-click the USB printer device that matches your printer model, and then select Remove Device.

  • Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer, and then restart the computer.

Happy trying and pls let me know if this helps 🙂

None of the instructions have helped. Still do not understand where one person can get WBP2CN1619BR when all that is available on 8710 driver page is WBP2CN1619AR, not BR.

Testing now by using static IP and turned off IPv6. Very frustating that a brand new printer doesn't seem to be able to wake up from sleep mode. If the newer firmware worked for some, where is it? Why isn't it on the 8710 drivers page?

Nevermind on the firmware, it seems that BR is OLDER than AR, all indications are that my firmware is up to date.

I'll continue testing, hopefully static IP fixes problem. Did not find a way to change channel.

Maybe because IP changed last number from 12 to 3. Weird.

Changing channels is done in your router.

These settings are for setting up your wireless or wired printers to:

* Stay connected to your router
* Fix printer ‘offline’ status
* Wake from sleep mode
* Speed up wireless printing

While DHCP is convenient, devices such as printers (wired and wireless) should always be assigned a static (fixed) IP address manually to avoid conflicts on your wireless network and MUST be outside the DHCP address range of the router. This is because printers are the only external devices that do not have the ability to automatically interrupt the router for a new DHCP address once the least time expires.

After setting the static IP, the computer(s) must be updated under Printer Properties/Ports to show a Standard TCP/IP port with the printers’ new static IP address.

1. Set a static IP in the printer outside the DHCP range of the router (check your manual).  This Static IP is important as DHCP IP addresses will change upon different power up sequences of your devices.  You always want your printer to come up with the same IP address all the time.  See how to do this here:

http://www.watchingthenet.com/linksys-tip-assign-static-ip-address-to-printer-while-using-dhcp-on-yo...

This is for Linksys routers but can be used for all routers. Verify your DHCP range and change this first if needed.  After setting the static IP, the computer(s) must be updated under Printer Properties/Ports to show a Standard TCP/IP port with the printers IP address.

To see why this problem exists and how to fix it, watch this video here for Windows.   Scroll down for MAC information.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEqvUKxWmq4

How to set a Standard TCP/IP port.  This is important.

a.    Click Start/Devices and Printers.  Right click on your HP Printer.  Select Printer Properties.  Select the Ports tab at the top.
b.    Select Add Port.  Select Standard TCP/IP Port.  Select New Port.
c.    Follow the Add Port Wizard.  Under Printer Name or IP Address, input the Static IP address you just set from the above information.  Example:  192.168.1.15.  The IP address will be copied under Port Name.  This is OK to leave this alone or you can put in your Printer Model.
d.    Select Next and Finish the Wizard.

If you create a TCP/IP port without a static IP above, you may lose your TCP/IP connection and have the same issue. This is because your network has powered up differently giving you a different DHCP address to the printer that does not match the TCP/IP address above.  This could occur at anytime just like the video shows.

For MAC PCs perform the above Static IP setting in the router and then watch here on how to perform your IP setting for MAC computers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5tNFjEBDOw

By performing the above, the printers Embedded Web Server (EWS) will now work all the time by going to your Printers Static IP address in your browser.

2. Verify in the printer that 'Auto Off/Sleep/Energy Saving Mode' is disabled and/or the System Mode Time Out is set to zero (0) if your printer supports this.  Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) by going to the printers IP address in your browsers address bar, click Settings Tab/Auto Off, or use the Printer Assistant, Printer Home Page (EWS). Also check your Printer Properties. This feature is automatically disabled when the printer is connected to a computer or mobile device, a network, or a fax line (if supported).  You also may not find this setting.

3. If the printer supports and has IPv6 enabled, disable IPv6 in the printer.

4. Make sure printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet and not into a UPS, power strip or surge protector. This will cause the printer to intermittently drop offline and disconnect.

5.  Make sure your printer and router are at least 5 feet apart from each other.

Solution worked for 8 days, now messed up worse than before.  Now OfficeJet 8710 shortcut only wants to add new printer, doesn't go to settings like before that shows ink levels, etc.

Very disappointed in the 8710 model, never had so much trouble before. Uninstalling and reinstalling doesn't work, holds connection for a day or two at the most. Constantly turn on and off to print. Totally irked.

Update. New drivers available (J8710_Full_WebPack_40.11.1148.exe) so I installed and it seemed to work again for about 3 days.  Unfortunately that is as long as it worked. Had to turn printer off and on to be connected. OJ8710 seems to have a real problem with waking up from sleep mode. I have it set to sleep after 5 minutes, no need to wear out LED readout.

No idea if it needs a better driver or a firmware update. Getting to be very annoying.

Let's verify a few things.

Starting DHCP address in router?

Ending DHCP address in router?

Static IP address set in printer?

I posted an update in this thread:

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Inkjet-Printing/multiple-issues-with-office-jet-pro-8710/td-p/6086344

So all avenues have been tried and tested, from IP address, to reset, et al.

Frustrated!
