Then just call HP. They should be able to replace the cartridge.

EDIT: Or you could try the steps in THIS document before calling them. It might jus get the cartridge to work.

Once more, thank you very much for your help. I already tried everything, but it doesn't resolve the problem. Next monday I'll call local Hp assistance, and I hope they would help me.

how can i fix this problem?

'Refer to printer documentation' message appears when I attempt to print.  What do I do?

I have this same error.  Does anyone know how to fix this?  This error occured after I changed my printer cartridges.  Now, nothing on the C5250 printer works.

This is what I did:

- Open printer and remove both the colour and black cartridges.

- Close the printer and wait for the prompt to install the tri-colour cartridge.

- Open the printer and install the tri-colour cartridge ONLY.

- Close the printer and wait for the prompt to install the black cartridge.

- Open the printer and install the black cartridge.

- Close the printer and it should then prompt you to insert paper to perform the cartridge alignment.

This solved the problem for me, hopefully it can be of help to someone out there.

Printer will not print. Message reads ! Print Cartridges Refer to printer documation

My 3-yr old C5280 All-in-one printer came up with the same problem yesterday - “Print Cartridges" "Refer to printer documentation” and the orange light flashes. HP “Solution Center” says the problem is with the 350XL black cartridge. which has been working okay for several months - and this is my third set of genuine ink cartridges but I can't print, scan or copy.

I removed and replaced the black cartridge and managed to print 4 sheets before it failed again. The problem is obvious;y loss of electrical contact and, because of that, another expensive cartridge, probably, won't make any difference.

Looking at the Internet this is obviously a common and wide-spread problem - and a design fault. HP must know about it and I thought that this forum would be the one to have the solution!  If it is a contact problem, does anyone know the best way to try to clean the contacts, please?

I was having the same problem.  Putting a new black cartridge in the printer fixed it for me.

without any apparent reason, when I turn on my Hp photosmart c5280 all in one, the message "refer to printer documentation" appears in the printer screen, and it can't print. In the printer  manager software I can see that the black ink cartridge isn't shown, it isn't recognized by the printer. It's a original Hp cartridge, Hp 350 xl, and I always used original parts for my printer. I tried to place an old and empty cartridge in the printer in place of the black un-working one, and the old one is well recognized, in fact printer tell me that the cartridge is empty, but at least it's shown as placed.
