Hi concetta,

Follow these steps to print a self-test report from the control panel. Make sure you have plain white paper correctly loaded in the product before beginning the procedure

1. Press and hold the Start Copy Black button and the Start Copy Color button until the product makes some noise

2. Release both buttons. The self-test report prints.

Hi concetta,

Since the test page printed ok it appears that there is something in the operating System causing the issue. Install this printer on a different computer, and let me know if you experience the same issues?

thank you. I do not have time to do all of this. Nothing wrong with OS. My canon worked just tine. HP is  installed correctly and compatible with my windows XP. Given all the other posts- can we just admit  it's a piece of junk or does everyone have operating system problems all of a sudden, coincidentally after installing the HP printer.  I did a diagnositic check up on it through "tools" and inserted the error codes in my previous message ,but it looks like this web site will not allow it t be inserted, although the option to "insert" is listed above the message box.I am also frustrated with the HP lack of immediate support and failure to resolve the problem. All I get from HP is coupon offers and pop up junk now. What a nightmare; junk junk junk junk junk

Hi concetta,

Having you try using this printer on a different computer is not me telling you that you have an issue with your operating system it is a way to help isolate the root cause you are having with the printer. If you are unable to print from your computer and it works fine on the other then we need to look at what on the computer is causing the issue. It is possible that the application program you are attempting to print from is causing the issue not the operating system.

What happens if you print from Notepad or WordPad?

I am here to assist you as long as it takes to figure out the root cause. If you wish to continue troubleshooting the issue please let me know?

I resolved the issue! I downloaded HP printer Doctor, printed out a test page all was fine; but it still would not print black text from other programs;then clicked firewall. As it turns out I had two firewalls installed. Windows XP must have installed  its firewall on the latest update. I usually only have the one from McAfee installed. So I disabled the Windows XP firewall and the printer  prints in black ink just fine ! Please share this info with others having this problem- to make sure there is only one firewall installed.I had disabled my Windows XP firewall quite some time ago. I can only assume it got reinstalled with an update if that is possible.

Thank you for your efforts to help and i apologize if I was rude earlier; I was just so frustrated.
